We remove the gearbox if it needs to be repaired or replaced.
Removal
1. Place the vehicle on an inspection pit or overpass (see "Preparing a car for maintenance and repair").
2. Drain the oil from the rear axle (see "Rear Axle - Checking Oil Level and Changing Oil").
3. Disconnect the cardan shaft from the drive gear tail flange (see "Cardan transmission - removal and installation").
4. Remove the axle shafts (see "Half shaft - removal and installation, replacement of seal").
5. With a socket wrench by 12 mm we unscrew the eight bolts securing the gearbox to the rear axle beam.

On early production vehicles, a sealing gasket was installed between the flanges of the gearbox and the rear axle. Currently, the joint is sealed with an oil-resistant sealant.
Installation
1. Remove any remaining sealant from the surfaces of the rear axle and gearbox joint and degrease these surfaces, as well as the bolt threads and threaded holes in the beam, with solvent or gasoline.
2. Apply a thin layer of oil-resistant sealant to both surfaces, and apply fixing glue to the threaded part of the gearbox mounting bolts.
3. Install the gearbox into the beam and evenly (criss-cross) we tighten the bolts that secure it.
4. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
5. Fill the rear axle with oil (see "Rear Axle - Checking Oil Level and Changing Oil").
