History of the model
The development of the "six" began in 1974. The most important tasks for modernization VAZ-2103 were to reduce the cost of production by eliminating metal and chrome elements and using plastic ones instead, as well as improving the lighting equipment. The appearance of the car was seriously updated. The front part, trunk, bumpers, grilles, turn signals and the design of the plant logo on the radiator grille were subject to changes.
The interior has also undergone major modifications. The trim, upholstery and armrests of the side doors have been improved, and the ergonomics of the seats have been improved. A brake fluid indicator and the ability to adjust the panel lighting have been added to the instrument panel, and a radio receiver has been installed in more expensive modifications. A steering column switch for the windshield washer has been added.
The engine was installed from VAZ-2103 with an increased cylinder diameter, which increased its volume to 1.57 liters and power to 78 hp. A special gearbox with reduced gear ratios was made for this engine. The clutch was also modernized - the area of the friction linings was increased. This engine was later installed on the then designed all-wheel drive VAZ-2121 "Niva".
VAZ-2106 was mass-produced on the third line of the plant's conveyor. In 1977, it was awarded the USSR State Quality Mark. During the entire period of production, minor changes were made to the car both on the outside and in the interior, as well as in the technical part. In 1980, the "Weber" carburetor was replaced with "Ozone", in 1986 the rear brakes became the same as on VAZ-2105, and in 1987 the gearbox also migrated to the "six". The electrical equipment was also modernized taking into account the experience of operating the car.
