Development «sixes» started in 1974. The most important tasks for modernization VAZ-2103 were the reduction in the cost of production due to the rejection of metal and chrome elements and the use of plastic instead of them, as well as the improvement of lighting equipment. The appearance of the car has been seriously updated. The front part, trunk, bumpers, grilles, turn signals and the design of the factory logo on the radiator grille have undergone changes.
The interior has also undergone major modifications. The trim, upholstery and armrests of the side doors have improved, and the ergonomics of the seats have improved. A brake fluid indicator and the ability to adjust the illumination of the panel were added to the instrument panel; a radio was installed in more expensive modifications. Added a windshield washer stalk switch.
Engine installed from VAZ-2103 with an increased cylinder diameter, which increased its volume to 1.57 liters and power to 78 hp. For this engine, a special gearbox with reduced gear ratios was made. The clutch was also modernized - the area of friction linings was increased. This motor was later installed on the then-designed all-wheel drive VAZ-2121 «Niva».
VAZ-2106 began to be mass-produced on the third line of the plant's conveyor. In 1977 he was awarded the State Quality Mark of the USSR. For the entire time of release, minor changes were made to the car both outside and in the cabin, and in the technical part. In 1980 the carburetor «Weber» was replaced by «Ozone», in 1986 the rear brakes became the same as on VAZ-2105, and in 1987 the gearbox also migrated to «six». The electrical equipment was also modernized taking into account the experience of operating the car.
Modifications of the VAZ-2106
- VAZ-21061 - with an engine from VAZ-2103.
- VAZ-21062 - export modification with a right-hand drive.
- VAZ-21063 - with an engine from VAZ-21011 with an electric fan instead of an impeller driven by a belt and an oil pressure sensor.
- VAZ-21064 - export modification of the VAZ-21061 with a right-hand drive.
- VAZ-21065 - a modification with improved equipment, produced in 1990-2001. With a more powerful generator, a 5-speed manual transmission, a rear axle gearbox with a gear ratio of 3.9, a contactless ignition system and improved lighting technology.
- VAZ-21064 - export modification of the VAZ-21063 with a right-hand drive.
- VAZ-2106 of the Izhevsk assembly - the VAZ-21067 engine with a fuel injection system and a catalytic converter that met Euro-2 standards.
