People call the car "eight", and in general for this family the name "chisel" has stuck. In total, about 885 thousand cars were produced.
History of the model
Designers have long understood that front-wheel drive has many advantages for building a car and the project began to be developed back in 1971, and the design of the VAZ-2108 was started in 1977, and in 1978 the first prototype was ready and its testing began. Porsche contributed to the design of some units. In 1984, the first 2,000 cars rolled off the assembly line, and in 1985 they appeared on retail sale. A total of about 900 thousand cars were produced. In 2004, it was replaced by the model VAZ-2113.
Description of the design
The car body is load-bearing, all-metal with three hatchback doors. The body elements are stamped from low-carbon steel with a thickness of 0.7-0.8 mm, and the reinforcing elements are 1.2 mm thick. The engine is an in-line four-cylinder carburetor, later they began to install an injector, with volumes of 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5 liters. The engine, together with the clutch and gearbox, is located entirely in the engine compartment and is mounted on three elastic supports.
The transmission was installed 4- or 5-speed, the torque was transmitted through shafts with CV joints. The steering gear is rack and pinion. The front brakes are disc, the rear are drum. The front suspension is of the MacPherson type, and the rear is a torsion-bar suspension with two longitudinal levers. The shock absorbers are double-acting hydraulic with a round steel spring and a compression buffer.
