Rear Brake Pads — Replacement (VAZ-2107)

Attention! Replace the pads as a set on both sides of the car.


Check the condition of the brake shoe linings periodically (see "Brake system - checking technical condition") and replace them without allowing the linings to wear to a thickness of less than 1.5 mm.

The work is shown on the brake mechanism of the right wheel.

Removal



1. Prepare the vehicle for operations (see "Preparing a car for maintenance and repair").

2. Move the parking brake lever to the lower position.

3. Remove the rear wheel (see "Wheel - replacement").

4. With a 7mm deep socket wrench (12mm on early production cars) we unscrew the two guide pins.

5. Apply penetrating lubricant to the axle shaft seat belt.

8. Using two mounting blades, leaning against the pads, push the pistons into the cylinder.

9. Pressing on the cup of the support stand, turn it until the slot in the cup aligns with the tail of the stand (while doing this we hold the stand on the back side of the brake shield).

10. Remove two cups with a spring and a stand. Similarly, remove the support stand parts from the other shoe.


11. Using a screwdriver, remove the lower tension spring.

12. Remove the rear brake shoe from the support and move it down.

13. Disconnect the end of the rear parking brake cable from the parking brake expansion lever.

14. Remove the pads with the spacer bar and the upper tension spring.

15. Disconnect the spacer bar and tension spring from the pads.

16. Using pliers, remove the cotter pin from the axis of the spacer lever.

17. Remove the washer, lever and axle from the shoe.

Installation



1. Using sliding pliers, move the pistons of the working cylinder inward.

2. Install the removed parking brake drive parts onto the new brake shoe in the reverse order.

3. Orient the spacer bar with the double slot towards the rear shoe.

4. After installing the brake drum, press the brake pedal sharply several times so that the thrust rings in the wheel cylinder take their working position.

5. Similarly, replace the pads on the opposite side of the car.

6. Adjust the parking brake (see "Parking brake - adjustment").
