- press the brake pedal with a force of 10-12 kgf to ensure that the pads fit to the drum. Holding the pads in this position, turn the eccentrics 1 and 2 by the hex heads (pic. 148) in the indicated direction until they come into contact with the pads;
- release the pedal and turn the adjusting eccentrics in the opposite direction by about 10°, thus setting the gap between the shoes and the drum. Then they sharply press the brake pedal 3-4 times and, with the pedal released, rotate the suspended wheels. In this case, the pads should not touch the drums.
A test drive checks the operation of the brakes, the free play of the brake pedal. After driving 5-6 km, without using the brakes, they stop and feel convinced that the brake drums do not heat up from the friction of the pads. If the drums become very hot, indicating friction between the shoes and the drum, repeat the adjustment.
If the adjustment fails to establish the required clearance between the shoes and the drum, remove the brake drum, check the condition of the shoes and the drum.
If necessary, replace or repair worn parts and, after assembly, re-adjust the gap between the shoes and the drum.
