- release the parking brake and loosen the wheel mounting bolts;
- lift the wheel and remove it, then remove the brake drum, for which unscrew the guide pins, insert them into the technological holes of the drum and screw them in until the drum separates. To facilitate this operation, it is recommended to apply the "Unisma" preparation in an aerosol package to the gap between the hub seat and the drum and hold for 10...15 minutes;
- inspect the brake pads. If the thickness of the pads has decreased to 1.5 mm or the pads are damaged, replace them simultaneously on both brake mechanisms. To replace the pads, disconnect the cable end from the lever 10 (see figure 85), remove the cotter pin, press on the finger 9 and remove the manual brake shoe drive lever. Use pliers to disconnect the upper 7 and lower 3 tension springs and guide springs 5, being careful when doing so. Then remove the brake shoes and the expansion bar 8;
- before installing new pads, press the wheel cylinder pistons by lightly tapping with a hammer through a wooden spacer on the piston stops;
- check the condition of the drum working surface. If deep scratches have formed on it, bore and polish the drums, not allowing their diameter to increase over 201 mm;
- before installing the drum, lubricate the wheel hub seat with a thin layer of graphite grease;
- after assembling the brake mechanism, check the ease of wheel rotation; slight contact of the drum with the pads is allowed;
- press the brake pedal 2-3 times to set the wheel cylinder pistons to the working position and check the operation of the brakes while the vehicle is moving.
