Execution sequence
1. We install the car on a viewing hole or overpass (see "Vehicle preparation for maintenance and repair").
2. Shake the steering wheel alternately in both directions. Steering wheel free play (before the car wheels turn) should not exceed 5°in one direction, which corresponds to the movement of the wheel rim by 18-20 mm. The turning force of the wheel should not exceed 196 N (20 kgf), at the recommended pressure in tires and asphalt under the wheels.
Play or tight rotation of the steering wheel is eliminated by adjusting the gearing in the steering gearbox (see below "Engagement in the steering gear - adjustment") or tightening loose threaded connections of mechanism parts.
3. Pressing the brake pedal, shake the steering wheel to the left - to the right and make sure that there are no knocks on the parts. If knocks are heard, then their cause is a weak tightening of the threaded connections or wear of the ball joints of the steering rods.
4. Check the condition of the steering parts from the bottom of the car.
5. Before checking with a rag, we clean the mudguards of the steering rod joints and steering gear parts.
6. We check the reliability of fastening the bracket of the pendulum lever and the steering gearbox to the car body, if necessary, tighten the fastening bolts.
7. We check the absence of axial and radial play of the axis of the pendulum lever, shaking it with our hands. If backlash is detected, replace the pendulum arm assembly (see "Pendulum lever - replacement").
8. We inspect the condition of the mudguards of the steering rod joints. Cracks, tears or delamination of the cover from the metal edging are not allowed.
9. We check the movement of the tips along the axis of the fingers. The amount of movement should not exceed 1-1.5 mm.
10. We verify the absence of backlash in the ball joints, sharply shaking the rods with our hands.
11. If defects are found in the steering rods, we replace them (see "Tie rods - replacement").
