Steering — checking technical condition (VAZ-2112)

An assistant will be needed to complete the job.

1. Make sure that the steering column adjustment lever is raised up to the stop. Trying to move the steering wheel in the vertical plane, check the reliability of the steering column fastening with the locking mechanism. If the steering column moves, adjust the locking mechanism (see "Steering column locking mechanism - adjustment").

2. Trying to move the steering wheel along the axis of the steering shaft, we make sure that there is no displacement of the steering wheel on the splines of the shaft and the shaft in the steering column.

3. To check for play in the steering, turn the steering wheel to the position corresponding to driving straight ahead. Place a flat-head screwdriver on the instrument panel so that its blade is located under the rim of the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel to the right (choosing backlash) before the wheels start turning, then to the left and, using the blade of a screwdriver as a guide, mark these positions on the rim with chalk. The play should not be more than 5° (or 18 mm on the outside of the rim).

3. To check for play in the steering, turn the steering wheel to the position corresponding to…

Note. Increased play indicates the need to find and fix the problem. As a rule, the first thing to fail in the steering system is the tie rod ends. The ball pin installed in them breaks the polyethylene bushings, which leads to increased play in the steering system. It is also possible that the steering mechanism is loosened from the body.

4. Check the tightness of the steering gear mounting nuts and tighten them if necessary.

5. To check the tie rod ends, have an assistant gently rock the steering wheel from side to side. Place your hand on the tie rod connection with the suspension strut pivot arm (so that the palm touches them at the same time), we determine the play in the tip by touch.

5. To check the tie rod ends, have an assistant gently rock the steering wheel from side to side.…

Note: If there is play in the steering rod end, your palm will feel the rod shifting relative to the steering arm.

In a similar manner, we check the connection of the threaded insert with the rod and tip.

We repeat the check on the other side of the car. We replace the faulty tips (see "Tie Rod End - Removal and Installation"). If play is detected in the threaded insert connection, tighten the tie rod and tie rod end tightening bolts.

6. When rocking the steering wheel from side to side, listen to the operation of the steering mechanism. A knock from the right side of the steering mechanism indicates wear of the polyethylene bushing.

Recommendation: Replace the faulty steering mechanism (see "Steering gear assembly with steering rods - removal and installation").
