Clearance between valve levers and camshaft cams — adjustment (VAZ-2107)

            0

The gaps are adjusted on a cold engine. For adjustment, it is recommended to use a kit consisting of a wide feeler gauge and two open-end wrenches: by 13 and 17 mm. The work is shown using a carburetor engine as an example.

1. Prepare the vehicle for operations (see "Preparing a car for maintenance and repair").

2. Remove the cylinder head cover (see "Cylinder Head Cover Gasket - Replacement").

3. Check and, if necessary, adjust the tension of the timing chain (see "Timing Chain - Tension Adjustment").

4. Remove the distributor cap (see "Ignition timing - checking and adjustment").

5. Set the camshaft to the TDC position (top dead center) compression stroke in the 4th cylinder. To do this, use a special 38 mm key to turn the crankshaft until the mark on the camshaft sprocket matches the protrusion on the bearing housing. The outer contact of the runner should be directed towards the side electrode number 4 on the distributor cap.

5. Set the camshaft to the TDC position (top dead center) compression stroke in the 4th cylinder.…

In this case, the mark on the crankshaft pulley should coincide with the mark on the camshaft drive cover of the carburetor engine.

On an injection engine, the marks have a different shape.

In this position, we adjust the clearances at the inlet and outlet valves of the 4th (8th cam and 7th cam) cylinder, as well as the exhaust valve of the 2nd (4th cam) and the 3rd intake valve (6th cam) cylinders. We count the cams from the camshaft sprocket.

6. Insert a 0.15 mm thick feeler gauge between the lever and the camshaft cam. If the gap is correct, the feeler gauge should enter with a slight pinch. Otherwise, adjust the gap.

7. Using a 17 mm wrench, loosen the tightening of the adjusting bolt lock nut.

7. Using a 17 mm wrench, loosen the tightening of the adjusting bolt lock nut.

8. Insert the feeler gauge and use a 13 mm wrench to turn the adjusting bolt until the required clearance is achieved.

9. Remove the feeler gauge. Hold the adjusting bolt with a wrench and tighten the lock nut with a second wrench. Usually, the adjusting bolt rises slightly, reducing the gap being set. Repeat the adjustment if necessary.

10. Turn the crankshaft 360°. This will cause the camshaft and distributor rotor to turn 180°.

11. Similarly, we adjust the clearances at the intake valve of the 2nd cylinder (3rd cam) and the exhaust valve of the 3rd cylinder (5th cam), and also the intake (2nd cam) and graduation (1st cam) valves of the 1st cylinder.

12. Installation of all removed parts is carried out in reverse order.
