Valve timing oil seals — replacement (VAZ-2106)

Contents: Removal ↓ Installation ↓ Installation ↓
A sign of wear on the valve stem seals is the appearance of blue smoke from the exhaust pipe, especially when braking with the engine.

To complete the job you will need a valve spring compressor, an inertial puller, a torque wrench and a tin rod.

Removal

1. Prepare the car for work (see "Preparing a car for maintenance and repair").

2. Unscrew the spark plugs (see "Spark plugs - checking condition and replacement").

Attention! When performing the following operation (after removing the camshaft housing) it is recommended to mark the location of the valve drive levers.

3. Remove the housing assembly with the camshaft, valve drive levers and springs (see "Camshaft and valve levers - replacement").

When removing the camshaft, the pistons of the 1st and 4th cylinders were set to the BMT position, which will prevent the valve from falling into the cylinder after removing the crackers. In this position, we replace the caps of the valves of the 1st and 4th cylinders.

4. Install a rod of tin solder with a diameter of about 8 mm through the spark plug hole between the piston and the valve plate.

5. Install the valve spring compressor pressure bracket onto the spring plate, securing the support bracket with a nut screwed onto the bearing housing mounting stud.

6. Using a valve spring compressor, squeeze the valve springs and remove two valve springs from the groove.

After unscrewing the nut, remove the valve spring compressor.

7. Remove the spring plate.

8. Remove the outer and inner springs.

9. Remove the inner spring support washer.

9. Remove the inner spring support washer.

10. Install the collet of the inertial puller for removing caps on the cap and squeeze the collet by striking the upper striker against the lower one. By striking the upper striker against the puller nut, press the cap off the valve guide sleeve.

Installation

1. If the new caps come with a mounting sleeve, place the sleeve on the valve stem to prevent damage to the working edge of the cap.

2. Lubricate the inner surface of the cap with engine oil and move it along the installation sleeve until it stops against the valve guide sleeve. Remove the installation sleeve.

3. Using the mandrel included in the puller kit, press the cap onto the valve guide sleeve.

4. Install the parts removed from the valve in the reverse order.

5. Remove the solder rod and apply several light blows with a hammer to the end of the valve stem to ensure that the crackers are self-installing.

6. Similarly, replace the caps of the remaining valves of the 1st and 4th cylinders.

7. Turn the crankshaft 180° and, holding the camshaft sprocket with the chain, set the pistons of the 2nd and 3rd cylinders to the BMT position.

8. Replace the valve caps of the 2nd and 3rd cylinders.

9. After replacing the caps, turn the crankshaft 540° to set the piston of the 4th cylinder to the BMT position of the compression stroke.

10. Install the housing with the camshaft on the cylinder head studs and evenly tighten the mounting nuts (see "Camshaft and valve levers - replacement").

11. Untie the wire, install the sprocket with the chain on the camshaft, tighten the mounting bolt and lock it by bending the petals of the lock washer.

12. Check the coincidence of the marks.

13. "Charge" the chain tensioner and, having installed it in its original place, "discharge" it (see "Timing Chain Tensioner - Replacement"). Adjust the chain tension (see "Timing Chain - Replacement").

14. Adjust the clearance between the levers and the camshaft cams (see "Clearance between valve levers and camshaft cams - adjustment").

Installation

Installation of all removed parts is carried out in reverse order.
