Description of the design
The rear axle of the car is made in the form of a hollow beam, to the ends of which flanges with seats for axle bearings and holes for mounting brake shields are welded. In the middle, the main gear reducer with differential is bolted to the beam, and on the flange side, two axle shafts are inserted into the beam, transmitting torque from the reducer to the rear wheels.
Rear axle in all "classic" VAZ cars (except for all-wheel drive models) unified and, depending on the model, can be equipped with a gearbox with a gear ratio of 3.9 or 4.1.

The drive and driven gears of the gearbox are selected in pairs and if at least one of them is damaged, they are replaced as a set.
The drive pinion is mounted on two tapered roller bearings, with an elastic spacer sleeve inserted between their inner rings. When the nut on the drive pinion shank is tightened, this sleeve is deformed, providing a preload in the bearings.
An adjusting ring is installed between the drive gear and its bearing, which determines the axial position of the drive gear.
The driven gear of the main transmission is bolted to the differential housing, which is mounted on two tapered roller bearings. The preload in these bearings, as well as the gap between the teeth of the driving and driven gears, are adjusted by ring nuts screwed into the detachable bearing beds. Inside the differential housing, two satellites are freely seated on the axle, engaging with the axle gears.
The axle shaft enters the splined hole of the axle gear with its inner end, and rests on the ball bearing with its outer end, which enters the flange of the beam and is locked there by a plate. The plate, together with the oil deflector and the brake shield, is fastened with four bolts to the flange of the beam. A cuff is installed in the socket of the bridge beam. The bearing is fixed to the axle shaft by a locking ring from axial displacement.
The brake shield holds the brake shoes, the brake cylinder with the brake fluid supply pipe and the parking brake cable casing.
The brake drum is attached to the axle flange with two guide pins.
Two plugs with conical threads are installed for filling and draining oil.
