Measuring the axial free play of the axle shaft on a vehicle (VAZ-2105)

To perform this operation, loosen the rear wheel mounting bolts, place chocks under the front wheels and lift the rear axle. Release the parking brake and set the gearshift lever to neutral, remove the wheels and brake drums.

Attach device 02.7834.9504 2 (Fig. 133) to the axle shaft. Pass the extension of the indicator leg 1 through one of the two large openings of the axle shaft until it stops against the brake shield or the oil deflector, attach the indicator and, applying a force of about 5 kgf to the axle shaft flange in both directions along the rear axle axis, measure the free play of the axle shaft, which should not exceed 0.7 mm.
