Possible starter malfunctions, their causes and methods of elimination (VAZ-21051)

Cause	Method of elimination
When the starter is turned on, the anchor does not rotate, the traction relay does not operate
The battery is faulty or completely discharged	Charge the battery or replace it
The battery terminals and cable tips are heavily oxidized; the tips are not tightened properly	Clean the terminals and wire ends, tighten and lubricate with Vaseline
Interturn short circuit in the pull-in winding of the traction relay, short circuit to ground or open circuit	Replace the traction relay
Open circuit in the power supply circuit of the starter traction relay	Check the wires and their connections in the circuit between the starter plug "50" and the battery
Contacts "30" and "50" of the ignition switch do not close	Replace the ignition switch contact part
Traction relay anchor jamming	Remove the relay, check the ease of movement of the anchor
The starter relay is faulty	Clean the relay contacts. Replace the faulty relay
Open circuit in the power supply circuit of the starter relay winding	Check the wires and their connections in the circuit between the ignition switch plug "50" and the relay plug "86"
When the starter is turned on, the anchor does not rotate or rotates too slowly, the traction relay is triggered
The battery is faulty or discharged	Charge the battery or replace it
The battery terminals and wire ends are oxidized; the tips are not tightened properly	Clean the terminals and wire ends, tighten and lubricate with Vaseline
The fastening of the wire ends connecting the power unit to the body or to the negative terminal of the battery has become loose	Tighten the wire end caps
The contact bolts of the traction relay are oxidized or the nuts securing the wire tips to the contact bolts are loose	Clean the contact bolts, tighten the wire fastening nuts
Commutator burnout, brushes sticking or wearing out	Clean the commutator, replace the brushes
Open or short circuit in the stator or armature windings	Replace stator or armature
Short circuit of the brush holder of the "positive" brush to ground	Fix the short or replace the cover on the manifold side
When the starter is turned on, the traction relay repeatedly operates and switches off
The battery is discharged	Charge the battery
Large voltage drop in the traction relay power supply circuit due to severe oxidation of the wire tips	Check the wires and their connections in the circuit from the battery to the "50" plug of the starter
Open or short circuit in the holding winding of the traction relay	Replace the traction relay
When the starter is turned onthe anchor is rotating, the flywheel does not rotate
Freewheel clutch slippage	Check the starter on the stand, replace the clutch
Breakage of the clutch engagement lever or its axis popping out	Replace the lever or reinstall its axle
Broken clutch ring or buffer spring	Replace the coupling
Unusual noise from the starter when the anchor is rotating
The starter mount has become loose or its cover on the drive side is broken	Tighten the mounting nuts or repair the starter
The starter is mounted at an angle	Check the starter mount
Excessive wear of bearing bushings or anchor shaft journals	Replace starter
The stator pole mount has become loose (the anchor touches the pole)	Tighten the pole mounting screw
The teeth of the drive gear or flywheel ring gear are damaged	Replace the drive or flywheel
The gear does not disengage from the flywheel:
– jamming of the drive lever	- replace the lever
– clutch jamming on the splines of the armature shaft	– clean the splines and lubricate them with engine oil
– the clutch or traction relay springs are weakened or broken	– replace the clutch or traction relay
– the retaining ring has slipped off the clutch hub	– replace damaged parts
- jamming of the traction relay anchor	- replace the traction relay or eliminate the jamming
– the ignition switch contact part is faulty: contacts "30" and "50" do not open	– check the correctness of the contact closure in different key positions; replace the faulty contact part
