We remove the steering shaft for replacement.
To complete the work you will need an assistant and a special key by 10 mm for brake pipes, a transparent vinyl pipe of suitable diameter and fresh brake fluid.
Removal
1. Prepare the car for work (see "Preparing a car for maintenance and repair").
2. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery (see "Battery - Removal and Installation").
3. Remove the brake booster (see "Vacuum brake booster - replacement").
4. Turn the steering wheel to a position where the bolt of the tension sleeve (located at the lower end of the steering shaft) will take a position convenient for unscrewing the bolt.
5. With a socket wrench by 13 mm using an extension, unscrew the bolt of the tension coupling.

6. With the right tool (for example, with a chisel) we release the coupling to facilitate removal of the steering shaft.

7. Remove the steering column switch (see "Steering column switches - removal and installation").
8. Disconnect the wire ends from the ignition switch terminals (see "Ignition switch (lock) - removal, inspection and replacement of the contact group").
9. With a socket wrench by 10 mm or sliding pliers (in case of shearing of tear-off heads) we unscrew the two bolts securing the shaft bracket.

10. With a socket wrench by 13 mm we unscrew the two nuts securing the steering shaft bracket.

11. With a socket wrench by 13 mm we loosen the two nuts securing the steering shaft and gearbox shaft misalignment compensator.

12. Remove the bracket from the steering shaft.

13. Having bent back the edges of the carpet and sound insulation, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the three screws securing the steering shaft seal and move the seal upward.

14. Remove the steering shaft from the gearbox shaft.
15. Remove the ignition switch (see "Ignition switch (lock) - removal, inspection and replacement of the contact group").
16. With a socket wrench by 10 mm loosen the clamp bolt of the upper shaft support pipe fastening.

17. Remove the pipe from the bracket.

Installation
1. The steering shaft is installed in the reverse order. In this case, we orient the recess made on the splines of the steering shaft coupling towards the protrusion of the steering gear shaft.

2. Connect the steering shaft to the gearbox shaft (if necessary, tap the end of the steering shaft with a hammer).
3. Install the steering shaft bracket without tightening the compensator nuts.
4. Install the steering column switch and steering wheel on the shaft splines, secure it with a nut and turn it left and right several times to adjust the shaft.
5. Finally tighten the compensator mounting nuts.
6. Bleed the brake hydraulic system (see "Hydraulic brake drive - bleeding and replacing brake fluid").
