You need a special key to do the job at 38 mm for turning the crankshaft and a multimeter.
Execution sequence
1. We prepare the car for work (see "Vehicle preparation for maintenance and repair"). We turn on the neutral gear.
2. Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal (see "Battery - removal and installation").
3. Remove the cover of the ignition distributor (see "Distributor cap and slider - check and replace").
4. Special key at 38 mm turn the crankshaft clockwise (see "Front crankshaft oil seal - replacement"), until the side contact of the slider approaches (will not reach about 30°) to the distributor cap contact number one.
5. Connect one ohmmeter probe to "mass", the other to the distributor contact bolt connected to the coil output. The resistance shown by the ohmmeter should be zero.
6. Slowly turn the crankshaft until the mark on the pulley is aligned A with one of the labels B on the timing cover. If at the moment the marks on the pulley and the cover coincide, the resistance has increased to infinity - the ignition timing is set correctly. If the resistance increased earlier or remained equal to zero, it is necessary to adjust the ignition timing.
Note: Long mark corresponds to 0°ignition timing (while the piston of the first cylinder is at the top dead center of the end of the compression stroke), medium - 5°, short - 10°. When using gasoline with an octane rating of 92-95, the ignition timing is set to 5°.
7. To adjust, loosen the nut securing the distributor to the cylinder block (see "Ignition distributor - removal and installation").
8. If the resistance tends to infinity, turn the distributor housing clockwise to the position where the resistance is zero.
9. From this position, slowly turn the distributor housing counterclockwise until the resistance begins to increase (opening moment of the breaker contacts). At the same time, to select the gap in the roller drive, slightly press the slider counterclockwise.
10. Tighten the distributor mounting nut.
11. Reinstall the distributor cap.
Note: You can check and adjust the ignition timing using a test lamp. In this case, work is done with the ignition on, so care must be taken. When the breaker contacts open, a voltage surge of up to 300 V occurs in the circuit. Note: The correct setting of the ignition timing can be checked on a warm engine when the car is moving. Moving on a flat horizontal section of the road, at a speed of 50 km / h, we turn on the fourth gear and sharply press the pedal "gas". If in the engine cylinders for a short time (up to three seconds) there was a detonation (identified by ringing sound), then the ignition timing is set correctly. With prolonged detonation, we reduce the ignition timing by turning the distributor housing clockwise, in the absence of detonation, we increase the angle. This adjustment, as a rule, is necessary in case of poor quality of the fuel in the tank and allows you to provide the most favorable engine operating conditions.
