Design Description
A three-shaft four-speed gearbox is installed on cars of the VAZ-2106 models. Cars VAZ-21065-00 and VAZ-21065-01 are equipped with five-speed gearboxes made on the basis of four-speed ones. Both units are interchangeable and most of their parts are the same.
The gearbox consists of a crankcase and a rear cover cast from aluminum alloy and connected with studs and nuts. From below, the crankcase is closed with a stamped steel cover, which is fastened with ten studded nuts. Inside the crankcase, the primary, secondary and intermediate shafts are mounted on rolling bearings. Their helical gears (except reverse gear) have permanent engagement. The input shaft rests with its front end on a bearing mounted inside the engine crankshaft and has splines on which «is sitting» clutch disc.
In the bore of the input shaft there is a roller bearing of the secondary shaft. The intermediate shaft is made in the form of a block of gears and is mounted on double-row ball and cylindrical roller bearings. The reverse gear is engaged by moving the intermediate gear along its axis into engagement with the spur gears of the intermediate and output shafts. The reverse gears are located inside the rear crankcase cover. Here are the gears of the 5th gear (in a five-speed box) and helical gears of the speedometer drive.
The forward gears are engaged by means of clutches with inertial synchronizers. The switching mechanism consists of forks with rods. The included gears are fixed by spring-loaded balls included in the wells of the rods. The impossibility of switching on two gears at the same time is provided by blocking crackers.
The gearbox is filled with gear oil in the amount of 1.35 liters. Self-sealing taper threaded plugs are used for filling and draining oil. The drain plug, screwed into the bottom cover, has a magnet inside to catch the metal wear products of the box mechanisms. The ends of the primary and secondary shafts are sealed with rubber cuffs.
