Note: At the beginning of production, the cars were equipped with the 2105 engine with a working volume of 1.3 liters and a toothed-belt drive of the gas distribution mechanism. At present, these engines are not produced and are not discussed in this section of the site.
The VAZ-2104 car is a passenger, five-seater, station wagon, modification of the VAZ-2105 and differs in the design of the rear part of the body, the arrangement of the rear seat and reinforced rear suspension springs.
The engine is located longitudinally in the front of the car. The clutch drive is hydraulic. The gearbox is mechanical, five-speed (four-speed on early production cars) three-shaft.
Torque from the gearbox to the rear drive axle is transmitted via a two-shaft cardan transmission.
The front suspension is independent, multi-link. The rear suspension is dependent, with a rigid beam connected to the body by one transverse and four longitudinal reaction rods.

Steering with a trauma-safe steering column and anti-theft device.
More detailed descriptions of the vehicle systems are given in the relevant sections.
