The VAZ-2105 engine, in comparison with other VAZ engines, has the following design features:
1. Adopted cast aluminum alloy cylinder head cover. Cover nuts are tightened to 5 Nm (0.5 kgf·m) in the order shown in Fig. 77.
2. In the timing mechanism drive, a toothed belt is used instead of a chain.
Tension of the timing belt drive of the timing mechanism
Every 10,000 km run, and on a new car after running the first 2000-3000 km, adjust the belt tension, for which:
- remove the top protective cover 8 (pic. 78);
- loosen the bolts 6 fastening the bracket 11 of the tension roller and smoothly turn the crankshaft two or three turns. In this case, the spring 12 will automatically set the required tension of the belt 10;
- first tighten the right and then the left bolts 6, install and secure the top protective cover 8.

Replacement of a gear belt of a drive of the timing mechanism
Every 60,000 km mileage, replace the belt with a new one. This operation is preferably carried out at a service station, where qualified personnel will ensure the high quality of this operation. If necessary, this operation can be performed independently in the following order:
- remove the belt 2 of the generator drive and the top protective cover 8;
- turning the crankshaft, align the mark «WITH» on pulley 1 of the crankshaft with a mark «D» (TMV) on the middle protective cover 5, and the label «F» on pulley 9 of the camshaft with a mark «E» on the cylinder head cover;
- remove the middle 5 and bottom 3 protective covers;
- remove the spring 12, loosen the bolts 6, move the bracket 11 of the tension roller 7 to the extreme left position and remove the belt 10;
- put a new belt behind pulley 1, put it on the toothed pulley 4 of the crankshaft, then on the pulley 13 of the oil pump drive roller and on the roller 7, pulling the belt counterclockwise;
- put the belt from the front end onto the camshaft pulley 9, push the bracket 11 to the right and install the spring 12;
- install the middle protective cover 5 without tightening the fastening bolts;
- turn the crankshaft two turns and check the alignment of the marks «E» and «F» when aligning labels «WITH» and «D»; if the marks match, tighten the right bolt 6 first, and then the left one; if the marks do not match, repeat the operation to install the belt;
- install and fasten protective covers 3, 5 and 8, put on the belt 2 of the generator drive and tighten it in accordance with the recommendations of the manual;
- adjust the ignition timing.
