The VAZ-2105 engine, compared to other VAZ engines, has the following design features:
1. A cast aluminum alloy cylinder head cover is used. The cover mounting nuts are tightened to a torque of 5 Nm (0.5 kgf·m) in the order shown in Fig. 77.

2. Instead of a chain, a toothed belt is used in the timing mechanism drive.
Timing belt tension of the timing belt drive
Every 10,000 km mileage, and on a new car after the first 2000-3000 km, adjust the belt tension, for which:
- remove the upper protective cover 8 (Fig. 78);
- loosen the bolts 6 securing the bracket 11 of the tension roller and smoothly turn the crankshaft two or three turns. In this case, the spring 12 will automatically set the required tension of the belt 10;
- tighten first the right and then the left bolts 6, install and secure the upper protective cover 8.

Replacing the timing belt of the valve timing mechanism
Every 60,000 km mileage, replace the belt with a new one. It is advisable to perform this operation at a service station, where qualified personnel will ensure high quality of this operation. If necessary, this operation can be performed independently in the following order:
- remove the generator drive belt 2 and the upper protective cover 8;
- when turning the crankshaft, align the "C" mark on the crankshaft pulley 1 with the "D" mark (VTM) on the middle protective cover 5, and the "F" mark on the camshaft pulley 9 with the "E" mark on the cylinder head cover;
- remove the middle 5 and lower 3 protective covers;
- remove spring 12, loosen bolts 6, move bracket 11 of tension roller 7 to the extreme left position and remove belt 10;
- place the new belt behind pulley 1, put it on toothed pulley 4 of the crankshaft, then on pulley 13 of the oil pump drive shaft and on roller 7, tightening the belt counterclockwise;
- put the belt from the front end onto the pulley 9 of the camshaft, press the bracket 11 to the right and install the spring 12;
- install the middle protective cover 5 without tightening the mounting bolts;
- turn the crankshaft two revolutions and check the alignment of the "E" and "F" marks when aligning the "C" and "D" marks; if the marks match, tighten the right bolt 6 first, then the left one; if the marks do not match, repeat the belt installation operation;
- install and secure protective covers 3, 5 and 8, put on alternator drive belt 2 and tension it in accordance with the manual recommendations;
- adjust the ignition timing.
