1. Before assembly, lubricate the helical splines of the anchor shaft and the overrunning clutch hub, the gear and the cover bushings with engine oil. Lubricate the drive ring with Litol-24 consistent grease.
2. Before assembly, check the axial free play of the anchor shaft by first assembling the covers, housing and anchor and tightening the tie rod nuts. In this case, the anchor may be without a drive, and the front cover without a lever.
3. For starter 35.3708, the axial free play of the anchor shaft should be no more than 0.5 mm. It is adjusted by selecting the thickness of the adjusting washer 10 (see Fig. Starter parts 35.3708), located between the anchor shaft lock washer and the cover on the collector side.
4. The axial free play of the anchor shaft in the ST-221 starter should be within 0.07–0.7 mm. The free play value is changed by selecting the number or thickness of the adjusting washers located on the front end of the anchor shaft.
5. Having selected the adjusting washers, proceed to assembly, which is performed in the reverse order of disassembly.
6. Place the insulating plastic tube on the tension bolt that passes under the busbar of the stator series coils. In the ST-221 starter, the insulating plastic tubes are placed on the tension studs.
7. After assembly, check the starter on the stand.
