Measuring the axial free play of the axle shaft on a vehicle (VAZ-21051)

The axial free play of the half-shaft can be measured on a car both with the wheel and brake drum removed and without them. In the first case, the measurement is more accurate.

Measuring the free travel of the axle shaft with the wheel and brake drum removed



1. Remove the hubcaps from the rear wheels and loosen the bolts that secure them.

2. Place chocks under the front wheels and lift the rear axle off the ground.

3. Release the parking brake and place the gear shift lever in neutral.

4. Remove the wheels and brake drums.

4. Remove the wheels and brake drums.


5. Screw the device 02.7834.9504 (2) (1 – indicator) to the axle shaft.

6. Pass the extension leg of indicator 1 through one of the two large holes in the axle shaft until it stops against the brake shield or oil deflector and secure the indicator.

7. Measure with an indicator, applying a force of about 49 N (5 kgf) to the axle flange in both directions along the rear axle axis. The free play should not exceed 0.7 mm.

Measuring the free travel of the axle shaft without removing the wheel and brake drum



1. Secure the 02.7834.9504 tool using one of the holes for the wheel mounting bolts.



2. Pass the indicator extension leg through the other hole under the wheel mounting bolt.

3. The force applied to the wheel along the rear axle axis should be about 98 N (10 kgf), the free travel of the axle shaft up to 0.7 mm.

4. Further measurements are taken in the same way as described above.
