We set the crankshaft to the position of the top dead center of the compression stroke of the piston of the first cylinder (long mark).
If the ignition distributor was not removed from the engine, then the compression stroke of the first cylinder is determined by removing its cover - the rotor contact must be against the internal contact of the cover, connected by a wire to the candle of the first cylinder. If the ignition distributor (after replacement or repair) only installed on the engine - we turn out the candle of the first cylinder. After closing the hole with a paper stopper, rotate the crankshaft. The outgoing air, pushing out the plug, will indicate the beginning of the compression stroke in the first cylinder.

We turn the distributor housing clockwise until the breaker contacts close - the lamp goes out.
Slowly turn the distributor body counterclockwise until the lamp lights up, while slightly pressing the rotor counterclockwise to select the gap in the drive. Holding it in this position, tighten the lock plate nut.
