Possible faults of the rear axle (VAZ-21011)

Cause	Method of elimination
Increased noise from the rear wheels
The wheel mount has become loose	Tighten the wheel mounting bolts
Worn or damaged axle shaft ball bearing	Inspect the axle shaft and replace the bearing
Constantly increased noise when operating the rear axle
The rear axle beam is deformed	Straighten the beam and check its dimensions
The axle shafts are deformed and have unacceptable runout	Straighten the axle shafts. If they are significantly damaged, replace them with new ones
Wear of splined connection with axle gears	Replace worn or damaged parts
Incorrect adjustment, damage or wear of gears or bearings of the gearbox	Identify the fault and repair the gearbox
Not enough oil	Restore the oil level and check for leaks through the seals or in the rear axle beam
Noise when accelerating a car
Worn or improperly adjusted differential bearings	Remove the gearbox, repair, replace parts if necessary
The engagement of the main gear teeth was incorrectly adjusted during the gearbox repair	Adjust the engagement
Damage to axle shaft bearings	Replace the bearings
Not enough oil	Restore the oil level and check for leaks at the seals or in the rear axle beam
Noise when accelerating and braking the car engine
Wear or failure of pinion bearings	Replace damaged parts
Incorrect side clearance between the teeth of the main gear	Check the gears and replace damaged ones, restore normal lateral clearance between the gear teeth
Noise when turning
Tight rotation of satellites on the axis	Replace damaged or worn parts
Scoring on the working surface of the satellite axle	Clean up any minor roughness with fine sandpaper; if the defect cannot be eliminated, replace the satellite axle
Seizure of axle gears in differential box	If there is minor damage to the gears and mating surfaces in the differential box, clean them with sandpaper and replace the damaged parts with new ones
Incorrect clearance between differential gear teeth	Adjust the gap
Damage to axle bearings	Replace the bearings
Knocking sound when the car starts moving
Increased clearance in the splined connection of the drive gear shaft with the flange	Replace the flange and final drive gears
Increased clearance in the engagement of the main transmission gears	Adjust the gap
Wear of the hole for the satellite axle in the differential box	Replace the differential box
The rear suspension rod mounting bolts have come loose	Tighten the bolts
Oil leak
Worn or damaged pinion seal	Replace the seal
Wear of the axle shaft seal, determined by oiling of the brake shields, drums and shoes	Check the runout of the axle shaft, the deflection of the beam; straighten or replace damaged parts. Replace the seal
Loosening the rear axle gearbox housing mounting bolts; damage to sealing gaskets	Tighten the bolts; replace the sealing gaskets
