Exhaust system — technical condition check (VAZ-2114)

During vehicle operation, exhaust system components are exposed to high temperatures, exhaust gases, water, snow, and reagents that are poured on the road in winter, as well as vibration. Therefore, as a rule, individual exhaust system components serve on a vehicle for no more than five years. The partitions in the muffler burn out, through corrosion appears in the walls, and the tightness of the exhaust system component connections is broken. Such malfunctions lead to an increase in the noise level of the exhaust of the running engine.

To carry out the work you will need an inspection pit or overpass.

Sequence of execution

1. Prepare the car for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. Inspect the suspension cushions of the main and additional mufflers.

Recommendation: Cushions that have cracks, tears or other damage must be replaced.

3. We can determine whether the exhaust system is leaking by traces of carbon deposits or places where gases are leaking.

Recommendation: Gas breakthrough through flange connections can be eliminated by tightening the fastening elements. The tightness of the connection of the muffler inlet pipe with the catalytic converter can be restored by replacing the springs of the flange tightening bolts. If this does not help, it is necessary to replace the metal-graphite sealing ring.

Defective system elements damaged by through corrosion must be replaced. Restoring exhaust system elements by welding gives only a short-term effect.
