Description of the exhaust system design (VAZ-2114)

The exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold, an inlet pipe, a main muffler and an additional muffler and is equipped with a catalytic converter.

Note: Some vehicles of the first years of production were not equipped with a catalytic converter.


The engine exhaust manifold is cast from cast iron. The connection of the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold with the cylinder head is made on six studs with nuts and sealed with a gasket consisting of two symmetrical parts. The flange of the inlet pipe is connected to the flange of the exhaust manifold with four studs with nuts through a heat-resistant (metal asbestos) gasket. An oxygen concentration sensor is installed in the lower part of the inlet pipe in front of the neutralizer.

The catalytic converter is located under the bottom of the car between the exhaust pipe and the additional muffler. A heat-protective metal screen is attached to the body above the converter. To reduce the transmission of vibrations to the body and reduce the load on the system during vibrations of the power unit, the connection of the exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter is made hinged (see Fig.). The mobility and tightness of the connection are ensured by two springs installed under the tie bolts instead of washers, and a metal-graphite sealing ring with a spherical outer surface. The flange of the catalytic converter attached to the exhaust pipe has a concave spherical surface, and the other flange has a convex spherical surface.



The connection of the neutralizer with the additional muffler is fixed. The connection of the main and additional mufflers is also made rigid, with a steel sealing ring. The connection is secured with a steel clamp consisting of two brackets.

The exhaust system is suspended from the body brackets on five rubber rings - cushions. The suspension cushions of the additional muffler and the main muffler are interchangeable.
