The need to replace the handbrake cables arises if the cables, as a result of corrosion, have lost the ability to move in the casing, have stretched out significantly, or have broken threads.
Helpful Hint: When replacing one of the parking brake cables, you must replace the other cable.
Removal
1. Prepare the vehicle for replacement of the parking brake cable (see paragraphs 2b and 4 "Preparing a car for maintenance and repair").
2. Remove the rear brake drums (see "Brake drum - removal and installation").
3. Remove the suspension shock absorbers from the additional muffler.
4. Loosen the lock nut of the parking brake lever travel adjustment nut (see point 3 "Checking and adjusting the handbrake").
Warning: The left rear handbrake cable goes through the right hole in the bracket, and the right rear handbrake cable goes through the left hole in the bracket.
5. Using a 13 mm deep-head socket wrench and a universal joint, unscrew the lock nut and adjusting nut and remove them from the handbrake rod.
6. Remove the handbrake cable equalizer from the adjusting rod.
7. Disconnect the handbrake cable ends from the equalizer.
8. Using a large slotted screwdriver, move the handbrake lever forward and remove the cable eyelet from the hook of the spacer lever.
9. Using a 10 mm open-end wrench, unscrew the nut of the bracket securing the handbrake cable to the rear axle lever.
10. Remove the front end of the handbrake cable from the hole in the body bracket.
11. Remove the handbrake cable from the bracket that mounts it to the body.
12. Remove the handbrake cable from the hole in the rear brake mechanism support shield and remove it from the vehicle.
In the same way, we remove the second parking brake cable.
Installation
We install the handbrake cable and all removed parts on the car in the reverse order of removal.
After installing the brake drums, adjust the stroke of the handbrake lever (see "Checking and adjusting the handbrake").
