- Charger;
- hydrometer.
Warning. Servicing the battery, you must follow the safety regulations.
Charging sequence
1. Remove the battery from the car or disconnect the wire terminals from the battery terminals.
2. Before starting charging, we turn out the plugs of the battery cans.
3. We connect the charger to the battery terminals, observing the polarity, and only after that we turn on the charger to the mains. The charging current should not exceed 10% of the battery capacity in amperes, that is, the maximum charge current is 5.5 A.
Note. Many chargers automatically maintain the charging current and do not have a regulator to change it.
4. We charge the battery. The process of charging the battery is controlled by measuring the density of the electrolyte. The charging time of a fully discharged battery is at least ten hours at a charging current of 5.5 A.
Recommendation. If some battery banks start «boiling» electrolyte, you should reduce the charging current to 2.5-3 A (on some automatic chargers, this requires you to switch a special toggle switch).
5. We stop charging the battery after an abundant release of gas begins in all its banks: first we disconnect the charger from the mains, and only after that we disconnect the wires from the battery terminals.
Helpful advice. If the charger has a current regulator, then to equalize the density of the electrolyte in all banks of the battery, you can recharge the battery with a low current for several hours (1-2.5 A), not allowing «boiling» electrolyte. Charging the battery should be completed after the density of the electrolyte stops changing in all banks within two hours.
