6. To tighten the belt, move the generator away from the cylinder block by turning the adjusting bolt clockwise.
7. To loosen the belt, move the generator to the cylinder block, turning the adjusting bolt counterclockwise. Turn the crankshaft with a wrench by the pulley mounting bolt two turns clockwise and check the belt tension again. Repeat the adjustment if necessary.
8. Tighten the generator mounting nuts.
Helpful Hint: If you have a digital auto tester, you can use it to very accurately adjust the belt tension. To do this, pre-warm the engine until it idles smoothly, connect the tester to the battery in voltage measurement mode, and slightly loosen the alternator tensioner. If the tension is insufficient, the numbers on the tester will change continuously. Gradually move the alternator toward the belt tensioner (tension bolt) until the numbers on the tester stop jumping. By tightening the generator fasteners in this position, you will ensure optimal belt tension.
