Adjusting the clearance in the engagement of the roller with the steering gear worm (VAZ-21051)

1. After making sure that there is no axial movement of the worm in the bearings, use puller A.47035 to press out the ball joint pins from the holes in the pitman arm and disconnect the rods from the pitman arm, while maintaining the straight-ahead position of the front wheels.

2. By shaking the pitman arm by the head, check if there is any play in the engagement of the roller and the worm. Within the steering wheel rotation of 300 in each direction from the neutral position, there should be no play, i.e. no noticeable free play of the pitman arm.

3. If you feel free movement of the bipod, loosen nut 3 (see Fig. Section of the steering gear housing) of the adjusting screw and, lifting the lock washer, tighten the adjusting screw 2 until the gap is eliminated. Do not tighten the adjusting screw too much. Then, holding the adjusting screw with a screwdriver, tighten nut 3.

4. After making sure that the pitman arm does not move, connect the ball joint pins to it. Check the steering wheel turning force. If it exceeds 196 N (20 kgf), loosen the adjusting screw 2.
