Check the angles of the front wheels at the service station, where the optical stand will ensure high accuracy of this operation. Below is a way to check and adjust only the camber and toe, which you can do yourself, but with less accuracy, after the following requirements are met:
- the air pressure in the tires is correct;
- radial and axial runout of tires does not exceed 3 mm;
- axial clearance in the front wheel bearings is not more than 0.15 mm;
- the gap in the meshing of the worm and the steering roller provides a free play of the steering wheel no more than 5°;
- there is no gap between the axis of the pendulum lever and the bushings;
- shock absorber rods do not jam;
- ball joints of steering rods do not have a gap;
- the rubber of the hinges of the front suspension arms has no gaps and limiting deformations;
- front suspension ball joints do not have excessive play.
Check the installation of wheels on a fully fueled and equipped vehicle with a load of 3200 N (320 kgf). Park the vehicle on a level, level surface with the front wheels in a straight ahead position (bipod is in neutral position). In this case, the steering wheel spoke must be horizontal. If the spoke is in a different position, then remove the steering wheel and rearrange it so that the spoke is in a horizontal position. Steering wheel nut tightening torque 50 Nm (5 kgf·m).
To stabilize the position of suspension units «press» them, applying 2-3 times from top to bottom a force of about 400-500 N (40—50 kgf) first on the rear bumper, and then on the front.
To determine the camber of the wheels, measure the distance «A» (pic. 52) between the wheel rim and the square. Then move the vehicle so that the wheels turn 180°and measure the distance «IN». When the wheels are correctly installed, the size «IN» should be 1-5 mm larger than the size «A». The camber is adjusted by changing the number of spacers between the lower arm axle and the cross member.
Check and adjust the toe-in of the wheels only after checking and adjusting their camber. To determine wheel alignment, measure the distance «WITH» between corresponding points on the front wheel rims. Then move the vehicle so that the wheels turn 180°and measure the distance «ABOUT». When the wheels are correctly installed, the size «WITH» must be larger «D» by 2-4 mm.
Toe-in is regulated by changing the length of the side steering rods. To do this, loosen the clamps 2 (pic. 53) and turn the adjusting sleeves 1 by the same amount in opposite directions, changing the length of the side rods. At the end of the adjustment, tighten with a torque of 19 Nm (1.9 kgf·m) clamps 2 so that their slots are in a horizontal plane, and the ends do not touch after tightening.
It is approximately possible to check the camber and convergence of the wheels on an unloaded car. In this case, the camber must be within B-A=-1÷+3 mm, and the toe-in C-D=4±1 mm.
