Gearbox — technical condition check (VAZ-2112)

Before proceeding to check the technical condition, check the oil level in the gearbox (see below, "Gearbox - Checking the oil level"). In a gearbox that is operated with a low oil level in the crankcase, intensive wear of parts occurs and its failure is possible soon. Inspect the gearbox from all sides in an inspection pit or overpass, make sure there are no oil leaks at the junction of the crankcases and cover, as well as through the seals of the wheel drives and the rod of the gear selection mechanism. Make sure that the clutch release mechanism is in good working order and correctly adjusted (see "Clutch - checking technical condition").

Pressing the clutch pedal, we engage all the gears in turn, checking the clarity of their engagement and disengagement. If necessary, adjust the gear shift mechanism (see "Gear shift mechanism drive - removal, installation and adjustment").

We set the gearshift lever to neutral and start the engine. Press the clutch pedal several times and listen to the sound of the gearbox bearings. It appears when the clutch pedal is released and disappears when it is pressed. Loud noise from the bearings indicates that they are worn out.

We check the operation of the gearbox while driving. To do this, first moving with acceleration and then with deceleration, we shift gears up and then down. We check the clarity of gear engagement and disengagement, the operation of the synchronizers while driving. We make sure that there is no crunching, knocking or other extraneous sounds when the gearbox is operating, as well as spontaneous gear disengagement when the load changes.
