Camshaft drive (camshaft drive belt front cover removed): 1 - toothed pulley of the water pump; 2 - tension roller; 3 - a gear pulley of a camshaft; 4 - belt; 5 - generator drive pulley
You will need: Keys «at 17» and «at 19», wheel wrench, two drills ∅ 4 mm.
Before starting work, place the gear lever in neutral position and remove the front cover of the camshaft drive belt (see subsection 3.15).
Too much belt tension leads to increased wear on the water pump bearings and idler pulley.
With a weak belt tension, a violation of the valve timing is possible due to the belt jumping over the teeth of the camshaft pulley. In addition, incorrect adjustment leads to increased belt wear.
Warning: Turn the crankshaft clockwise (in the direction of rotation of the crankshaft) only for the pulley bolt to it. Do not turn the crankshaft by the camshaft pulley.
Recommendation: There is a special wrench for turning the tension roller. If it is not available, you can use two suitable pins (e.g. drills), firmly inserted into the holes of the roller, and a screwdriver.
Turn the crankshaft with a balloon wrench on the bolt securing the alternator drive pulley through the hole in the right wheel well (to make it easier to turn the shaft, you can unscrew the spark plugs).
Check the tension of the belt: its leading branch must turn 90°from the force of the fingers (1.5-2 kgf), applied in the middle between the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys.
If the tension is not as specified, loosen the tension roller mounting nut.
To tension the belt, turn the tension roller counterclockwise (about 10-15°), to loosen - clockwise. In the absence of a special key, insert two drills into the holes of the roller...
... use a screwdriver to turn the roller in the appropriate direction and, holding the roller in this position, tighten the nut of its fastening.
Rotate the crankshaft two turns and check that the TDC marks match (see subsection 3.15) and belt tension. Repeat the adjustment if necessary. Install the front cover after adjustment.
