Before starting work, disconnect the wire from the terminal «-» battery.
Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the position of top dead center (TDC) the compression stroke is necessary so that when carrying out work related to the removal of the camshaft drive belt, the installation of the valve timing is not disturbed.
Set the TDC to the marks on the camshaft sprocket. When installed according to the marks on the flywheel, or the alternator drive pulley, or the crankshaft toothed pulley, the piston of either the 1st or 2nd cylinders can be in this position. Then be sure to check that the marks on the flywheel, or the alternator drive pulley, or on the toothed pulley: the crankshaft (if the alternator drive pulley is removed). If at the same time the marks on the flywheel or crankshaft pulley do not match, it means that the installation of the valve timing is violated (1st cylinder piston not set to TDC). In this case, it is necessary to remove the camshaft drive belt and turn the crankshaft until the marks are aligned.
Warning: Turn the crankshaft only clockwise (in the direction of rotation of the crankshaft) for the bolt securing the alternator drive pulley to it. Do not turn the crankshaft by the camshaft pulley.
Location of TDC marks
On the camshaft pulley - a ledge; on the back cover of the camshaft drive belt - a mustache.
There is a notch on the alternator drive pulley; on the front cover of the camshaft - a long protrusion (removed alternator drive belt). The short protrusion located nearby is a mark for setting the ignition moment.
On the flywheel - risk; on the scale of the crankshaft rear oil seal holder - middle cutout (remove the rubber plug).
On the crankshaft pulley - a dot; on the oil pump cover - a triangular cutout. These marks are only visible when the alternator drive pulley is removed.
Order of execution
Turn the crankshaft with a balloon wrench on the bolt securing the alternator drive pulley through the hole in the right wheel well (to make it easier to turn the shaft, you can unscrew the spark plugs) so that...
... marks on the alternator drive pulley and on the front cover of the camshaft drive (long mark) matched.
Remove the three bolts securing the front cover of the camshaft drive belt.
Remove bolts together with flat washers.
Remove the front cover.
Check the alignment of the marks on the camshaft pulley and the rear cover of the camshaft drive belt.
If the mark on the pulley is on the opposite side of the mark on the rear cover, then the piston of the second cylinder is at TDC. Rotate the crankshaft one turn.
