To perform repair work on removing and installing the steering gear assembly with steering rods, you will need an assistant.
Removal
1. We prepare the vehicle for work (see points 2b and 4 "Preparing a car for maintenance and repair").
2. Press the ball joint pins of both outer tie rod tips out of the pivoting levers of the front suspension struts (see points 4-6 "Tie rod end - removal, installation, replacement").
3. Unscrew and remove the clamping bolt of the lower flange of the elastic coupling, and open the flange with a large slotted screwdriver (see point 7 "Steering column assembly - removal, installation, replacement").
4. Using a 13 mm deep-head socket wrench, unscrew the two nuts on the right and left brackets securing the steering gear to the engine compartment bulkhead.
5. Remove the steering gear mounting brackets, move the steering gear forward a little, removing it from the mounting studs and disengaging the drive pinion shaft from engagement with the lower flange of the coupling.
6. Turning the steering gear with the drive pinion shaft upward, we remove it from the engine compartment through the opening in the left mudguard.
Installation
We install the steering gear and all the removed parts on the car in the reverse order of removal, while the assistant in the car interior puts the lower flange of the coupling on the steering gear shaft in the required position (see "Steering column assembly - removal, installation, replacement").
