Removal
1. Remove the timing belt (see "Timing Belt - Replacement").
2. Unscrew the nut and bolt of the upper fastening of the rear timing belt cover (see "Coolant pump - replacement").
3. Remove the cylinder head cover (see "Cylinder Head Cover Gasket - Replacement").
4. On engines with phased fuel injection disconnect the wiring harness connector from the camshaft position sensor (see "Camshaft Position Sensor - Checking and Replacing").
5. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the coolant temperature sensor (see "Coolant Temperature Sensor - Checking and Replacing").
6. With a socket wrench by 10 mm we unscrew the bolt and two nuts securing the plug.

There is a rubber sealing ring installed under the plug mounting bolt. Replace the damaged sealing ring.

7. Remove the plug.
Note: On an engine with a camshaft position sensor, the plug can only be removed if the pin (1) is positioned opposite the slot (2).

8. Remove the plug sealing ring.

Recommendation: The sealing ring must be replaced if it is damaged or if oil has been leaking from under the plug.
9. With a socket wrench by 13 mm evenly (in several stages) we unscrew the ten nuts securing the two bearing housings.

10. Remove the front bearing housing.

11. Remove the rear bearing housing.

12. Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head by slightly pulling back the rear timing belt cover.

13. Remove the oil seal from the camshaft.
Installation
1. Lubricate the camshaft journals with clean engine oil.
2. Place the camshaft into the cylinder head with the pin facing up.

3. Before installing the bearing housings on the mating surface of the cylinder head, apply a thin layer of sealant in the areas of the front seal and plug.

4. Evenly, in several steps, tighten the bearing housing nuts until the housings touch the cylinder head (following the sequence shown in the photo). Then tighten the nuts to a torque of 18.4-22.6 N·m (1.9-2.3 kgf·m).
5. Press in the new camshaft oil seal (see "Camshaft Seal - Replacement").

6. Before installing the plug, put the sealing ring on it.

7. Further assembly is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
