Coating polishing
To preserve the paintwork of the body and keep it in good condition for a long time, it is necessary to select polishing agents that correspond to the condition of the coating. In this case, it is necessary to follow the recommendations for their use. In the first 2-3 months of car operation, the body coating is washed only with cold water. For polishing a new coating (up to 3 years) use non-abrasive polishing agents for new coatings. When operating a car in the 4th and 5th years, car polishes for weathered coatings are used, which have a small amount of abrasive substances in their composition. After 5 years of intensive use, car polishes are used for old coatings.
To prevent the polish from drying out, polish the body in small areas by hand with a clean flannel. To eliminate minor defects in the paintwork, polishing pastes VAZ-1, -2 or polishing composition VAZ-03 can be used. Polished manually and mechanically with flannel or zigek circles.
The paste is stirred before use. When thickened, dilute with water. After polishing, wipe the surface with a clean flannel.
Repainting the body with synthetic enamel
Wash the body with water and with a spatula or brush remove the old peeled coating from defective areas. Wet grinding of painted surfaces is carried out with 55S4-P sanding sheets. With a small thickness of the coating that does not have mechanical damage, the surface is ground to an epoxy primer of the factory color. With significant corrosion, the coating is cleaned to the metal. The same is done if the surface was previously painted with nitro enamel.
The body is washed with water, blown with compressed air and dried. Then the surfaces to be painted are degreased with white spirit or BR-1 solvent gasoline and the welds and joints of the replaced parts are coated with D-4A sealing mastic. Remove excess mastic with a rag moistened with white spirit. Surfaces not to be painted are insulated with thick paper and adhesive tape.
GF-073 primer is applied to the surface areas cleaned to metal with a paint sprayer and an exposure time of 5 minutes is given. The viscosity of the soil should be 22–24 s at 20°C according to the VZ-4 viscometer. If necessary, dilute the soil with xylene. Then EP-083 epoxy primer is applied with a paint sprayer on the surfaces coated with GF-073 primer, as well as on the replaced body parts, and the body is dried at 90°C for 60 minutes. Before application, NF-1 desiccant is added to the soil EF-083 (5-7% by weight of the soil). The shelf life of the finished soil with a catalyst is no more than 7 hours. The viscosity of the soil should be 23-25 s at 20°C. The soil can be diluted with RE-11 V solvent or xylene.
The body is cooled, wet sanding is carried out with 55S4-P sandpaper, washed with water, blown with compressed air and dried. Putty, if necessary, uneven places with putty MS-00-C with a thickness of not more than 0.3 mm. The thickened putty is diluted with xylene to a viscosity suitable for application. The body is dried for 30 minutes at 18-20°C. The putty surfaces are polished again, the body is washed, blown with compressed air and dried. The unpainted surfaces of the body are isolated with thick paper, adhesive tape and installed in the spray booth.
Degrease the painted surfaces with white spirit. The doors, hood, tailgate are opened and two layers of ML-197 enamel are applied with a paint sprayer with an intermediate exposure of 7-10 minutes to the internal painted surfaces of the passenger compartment, doorways, end surfaces of doors, engine compartment and luggage compartment. Three layers of enamel are applied to the outer surfaces of the body with an intermediate exposure of 7-10 minutes. Dry the coating at 90°C for 1 hour and cool naturally.
Before using the enamel, add 4-5% DGU-7S catalyst or 10% maleic anhydride solution in ethyl acetate to it. The viscosity of the enamel should be 20 s at 20°C. The enamel is diluted with P-197 solvent, followed by filtration through a No. 014K mesh.
If it is necessary to remove the old complex coating, use the SP-7 remover. Apply it with a brush 2-3 times, depending on the thickness of the paintwork. The softening time of the coating with a wash is 30-40 minutes. Then, the softened coating is removed with a brush or spatula, the surface is wiped with white spirit to remove the remains of the wash, washed abundantly with water and the body is dried.
Painting individual parts
After replacing individual parts (fenders, doors, etc.), and also after straightening work on the deformed parts, the entire outer surface of the part is painted. Before painting, the newly installed parts are lightly sanded and then EF-083 epoxy primer is applied to the entire surface.
Preparation for painting and painting with enamel is carried out according to the technology of repainting the body.
