Checking and adjusting the free travel of the brake pedal (VAZ-21099)

You will need: 3mm thick plate.

Before you begin: Disconnect the cable from the "-" terminal of the battery.

Caution! Perform adjustments with the engine not running.


Caution! The free travel of the brake pedal is adjusted by moving the brake light switch and, when adjusted correctly, should be 3–5 mm.


Attention! If the free travel of the brake pedal is reduced, the wheels may be braked, causing the brake mechanisms to overheat, as a result of which the car accelerates poorly.

1. Gently press the brake pedal with your hand until you feel resistance. In this position, insert a 3 mm thick plate between the switch buffer and the pedal bracket. If the plate does not fit between the bracket and the buffer or there is a large gap between them (more than 2 mm), adjust the brake pedal free play.

2. While holding the pedal down, loosen the two nuts securing the brake light switch and move the switch to achieve the required free travel of the pedal. After adjustment, the bracket should rest against the switch buffer (with the pedal released). Keeping the switch in this position, tighten the mounting nuts. If this method does not allow you to adjust the pedal free play, be sure to contact a specialist.
