According to the Rules of the Road, the parking brake must hold the vehicle on a slope of 25% when the parking brake lever is moved 2-8 clicks (on pre-1995 models by 5-7 clicks).
Park the vehicle on level ground to test the parking brake. Raise the parking brake lever 2-3 clicks. Jack up one of the rear wheels. If the handbrake is set correctly, the lifted wheel can only be rotated with a very large amount of force.
Check lever travel. If the lever travel is more than 8 clicks, the handbrake will not hold the vehicle downhill. If the stroke is less than 2 clicks, the wheels may partially lock up while driving. In both cases, the parking brake must be adjusted.
Adjustment is recommended to be carried out on a lift, overpass or inspection ditch.
1. Raise the parking brake lever 1-2 clicks (only on pre-1995 models.).
2. Loosen the equalizer locknut.
3. Tighten the equalizer adjusting nut until the parking brake cable is tightened. If the cable cannot be tensioned, replace it.
4. Check - the full stroke of the parking brake lever should be 2-4 clicks (pre-1995 models 4-5 clicks).
5. After checking the travel, fully tighten the equalizer locknut.
6. Lower the parking brake lever all the way down and rotate the rear wheels. They should rotate evenly, without jerks.
