- special pliers for installing clamps for fastening anthers of CV joints (see point 9 "Special tools and fixtures") or sliding pliers;
- sliding pliers for removing retaining rings;
- grease for CV joints 80 cm3;
- new CV joint boot;
- new retaining and thrust rings of the hinge.
CV joint removal
1. Remove the front wheel drive assembly from the car (see "Drive wheel drive - removal and installation").
2. We fix the drive assembly in a vice and remove the large and small boot clamps with special pliers or sliding pliers.
3. Cut off the CV joint boot with a knife (internal hinge).
4. By striking with a hammer through a soft metal drift on the inner race of the hinge, we knock the hinge off the drive shaft.
Warning. If the CV joint is reused, it is forbidden to strike the cage, balls or CV joint housing.
5. Remove the retaining and thrust rings from the splines of the shaft (see points 8 and 9 "SHRUS (front wheel drive outer joint) - removal, replacement of anther and installation").
6. We wash the hinge in kerosene, wipe it with a clean cloth and let it dry.
CV joint installation
1. We fix the drive shaft in a vice in a vertical position.
2. We wind the insulating tape on the shaft splines, put a new CV joint boot on the shaft and move the boot to the middle of the shaft.
Note. On the right drive turn the boot of the CV joint inside out onto the shaft.
Helpful advice. Do not use a socket head to install the thrust ring. The internal chamfer, found on almost all heads, will compress the ring, which will not allow it to be installed on the shaft.
2. Using a 24 mm open-end wrench as a mandrel, install a new thrust ring on the splined end of the shaft.
3. Using a slotted screwdriver, install a new retaining ring on the shaft.
4. We apply grease for CV joints to the shaft splines.
5. We put on the inner race of the hinge on the splined end of the shaft. Align the hinge body with the axis of the shaft. With hammer blows through a wooden gasket, we press the hinge onto the shaft until the retaining ring is fully installed.
6. Fill the hinge body with grease (80 cm cube for the whole hinge), and the rest is laid in the boot of the CV joint.
7. We put a large sealing belt of the anther on the hinge body, and install the small sealing belt of the anther into the groove of the shaft. Lifting the small sealing belt of the anther with a thin slotted screwdriver, releases excess air from the internal cavity of the anther.
8. Using special pliers or sliding pliers and a slotted screwdriver, install the large and small boot clamps.
Recommendation. Be sure to install a new retaining ring on the splined shank of the inner joint before installing the assembled drive to the vehicle.
9. We install the front wheel drive on the car (see «Installation», items 1-5 "Drive wheel drive - removal and installation").
