Checking the steering on a car (VAZ-2108)

At each vehicle maintenance check the condition of the protective cover 11 (see figure 101), caps of the hinges of the 2 rods and the tightness of their fit. They must be replaced if there are cracks, tears and other defects that violate the tightness.

Make sure that when the car wheels are in a straight line, the steering wheel spokes are horizontal. Otherwise, determine the cause of the malfunction and eliminate it.

Turning the steering wheel from lock to lock, check visually and by ear:

• reliability of fastening of the steering gear and steering wheel on the steering shaft;
• is there a gap in the rubber-metal joints 14 and in the joints 2 of the steering rods;
• reliability of tightening and locking of bolts 7 fastening rods to the rack and nuts of ball joint pins 2\
• whether there are any jams or obstacles preventing the steering wheel from turning.

If knocks and jams are detected, disconnect the transverse rods from the pivot arms of the telescopic suspension struts and repeat the check. Having made sure that the knocks and jams come from the steering, remove it from the car and repair it.
