- ruler
- wire or chalk
Steering wheel play must not exceed 5°.
Marks on the steering wheel instead of wire can be applied with chalk.
Attention! If the front wheels are in the straight ahead position and the steering wheel hub is at an angle, there is a problem with the steering. To eliminate it, contact the experts.
Wheel rim play is based on a standard 360 mm steering wheel. If the steering wheel of a different diameter is installed on the car, the play can be calculated using the formula:
L = 5 p D / 360
where L is steering wheel play, mm;
D – steering wheel diameter, mm;
p = 3,14.
1. Set the front wheels to the straight ahead position. In this case, the steering wheel spoke must be in a horizontal position.
2. Turn the steering wheel in either direction until the front wheels begin to turn.
3. Rest the end of the ruler against the dashboard and wind the wire around the wheel rim (or rope) at the level of touching the ruler with the steering wheel rim.
4. Turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction until the front wheels begin to turn. Wrap another wire around the rim (or rope) at the level of touching the ruler with the steering wheel rim.
5. Wire measure (you can also use a plastic clamp for fixing the electrical wiring) along the rim of the wheel, the distance between the two wires.
6. This distance should be no more than 15.7 mm. If the distance is greater, the wheel play is too high. In this case, contact a specialist.
