The cleaner does not work, the thermal bimetallic fuse is triggered
The activation of the fuse is detected by characteristic "clicks" when the cleaner is turned on.
Causes of the malfunction and ways to eliminate it:
- the wiper rods are deformed and touch the body parts; in winter, the brushes may freeze to the glass. Inspect the wiper mechanism and eliminate the causes that prevent the parts from moving normally;
- short circuit to ground in the wires that supply power to the electric motor. Disconnect the wires from the wiper and turn the ignition switch key to the "Off" position. Then use an ohmmeter or test lamp to check whether the yellow wires with a white stripe that connect the wiper to the switch are short circuited to ground at different positions of the wiper switch lever. If there is a short circuit, eliminate it;
- short circuit to ground in the wiper motor or short circuit in the armature winding. Disconnect the wires from the motor and use an ohmmeter or test lamp to check if there is a short circuit between the motor wires and ground. If there is a short circuit, disassemble the motor and eliminate the short circuit. If the armature winding is shorted to ground, replace the gear motor. Short circuit in the armature winding (between turns) can only be detected with a special device at a car service station.
The cleaner does not work, the thermal bimetallic fuse does not work
After making sure that fuse "5" in the mounting block is intact, check whether voltage is supplied to contact "53a" of switch 7 (see figure 128). To do this, remove the switch from the socket, disconnect the wiring block from it and, turning on the ignition, use a test lamp or voltmeter to check whether there is voltage on the tip of the yellow wire with a white stripe, which is connected to the "53a" terminal of the switch. In this case, two cases are possible.

a) Voltage is not supplied to contact "53a".
Causes of the malfunction and ways to eliminate it:
- break in the wires supplying voltage to the switch contact "53a". Check the wires, the reliability of their connections, replace damaged wires;
- the thermal bimetallic fuse in the cleaner is damaged. Check the fuse, replace the damaged one.
b) Voltage is supplied to contact "53a".
Causes of the malfunction and ways to eliminate it:
- the wiper switch is faulty. Check the switch contacts for closure. Replace the faulty switch;
- the wires connecting the contacts "53" and "53v" of the switch with the cleaner are damaged. Check the wires, clean their connections, replace damaged wires;
- wear or sticking of the wiper motor brushes, severe oxidation of the commutator. Disassemble the motor, clean the commutator with fine-grained sandpaper, check the ease of movement of the brushes in the brush holders. Replace worn brushes.
The cleaner does not operate in intermittent mode.
Causes of malfunction and ways to eliminate them:
- the wires connecting the terminals "I" and "S" of the relay to the wiper switch are damaged. Check the wires, clean their connections, replace damaged wires;
- the wiper switch is damaged - contacts "53a" and "I" or "53e" and "53" do not close. In the latter case, when the wiper is turned off, the brushes will not stop in their original position. Check the switch contacts for closure, replace the damaged switch;
- the wiper relay is faulty or its terminals are oxidized. Remove the relay from the mounting block and clean the terminals. To check the relay, connect its terminals "31" and "R" to the "ground", and "15" to the "plus" of the storage battery. Between the terminal "S" and the "ground", connect a test lamp of the A12 type, 3 W or a voltmeter. Connect the terminal "I" of the relay to the "plus" of the storage battery. If the relay is working properly, the lamp should light, and the voltmeter should show a voltage equal to the supply voltage. Replace the faulty relay.
When the cleaner is turned on, the brushes do not stop in their original position
Causes of the malfunction and ways to eliminate it:
- oxidation or loose contact of the limit switch contacts in the gear motor. Remove the gearbox cover and clean the switch contacts. If necessary, bend the plate of the movable contact of the switch so that its contacts open and close clearly with the cam of the gearbox gear;
- oxidation of the electromagnetic relay contacts in the wiper relay, when the wiper is turned off, the terminals "31v" and "S" do not close. Remove the wiper relay, remove the printed circuit boards from the relay casing and clean the electromagnetic relay contacts;
- the wiper switch is faulty - contacts "53e" and "53" do not close. Check the switch contacts for closure, replace the damaged switch.
The wiper motor is working, the brushes are not moving
Causes of malfunction and ways to eliminate them:
- the gear teeth of the gear motor are broken. Replace the gear;
- weak fastening of the crank on the gear motor axis. Check, tighten the crank fastening nut, positioning it so that it is parallel to the short rod of the wiper and is directed towards the electric motor when installing the brushes in the initial position.
