On VAZ-2108, VAZ-2109 cars, a single-wire electrical system with a nominal operating voltage of 12 V is used. However, depending on specific conditions, the voltage in the electrical system can fluctuate from 11 V to 14.5 V, and within these limits, consumers must maintain their operability. The negative terminals of the power sources are connected to the "ground" (battery and generator) and the second conclusions of consumers.

The switching on and operation of all systems are controlled by the corresponding switches and relays. The supply voltage to most consumers is supplied via the ignition switch. The exceptions are those consumers whose operation may be required at any time, including when the vehicle is parked with the ignition off. Such consumers include: hazard warning lights, horn, brake lights in the rear lights, 16-pin socket for a portable lamp, and interior light. These consumers are connected directly to the generator-battery line.

To protect against short circuits, the vehicle has 16 fuses located in the fuse box 37. Three fuses (4th, 8th and 12th) are designed for a current of 16 A, and the rest for 8 A. The fuse numbers and the circuits they protect are given in the table:

№Protected circuits
1, 2Reserve
3Headlight cleaners (at the moment of switching on). Headlight washer relay (contacts). Headlight washer activation valve.
4Headlight cleaners (in working mode). Headlight washer relay (winding). Heater fan Washer motor. Rear window wiper. Rear window washer relay. Windshield and rear window washer valves. Engine cooling system electric fan relay (winding). Rear window heating relay (winding) and control lamp.
5Direction indicators and relay-interrupter of direction indicators and hazard warning lights (in turn indication mode). Indicator lamp for direction indicators. Rear lights (reversing light bulbs). Windscreen wiper and switch relay. Generator excitation winding (when starting the engine). Indicator lights: brake fluid level, oil pressure, carburetor air damper and parking brake. "Stop" light indicator. Coolant temperature gauge. Fuel gauge with reserve indicator light. Voltmeter.
6Rear lights (brake light bulbs). Interior lighting lamp.
7License plate lights. Underhood light. Instrument and cigarette lighter lights. External lighting indicator light. Heater lever light panel.
8Electric fan of the engine cooling system and its switching relay (contacts). Sound signal and its switching relay.
9Left headlight and left taillight (side light).
10Right headlight and right taillight (side light).
11Direction indicators and hazard warning flasher relay (in emergency mode) Hazard warning light.
12Rear window heating element and relay (contacts) for switching it on. Portable lamp socket. Cigarette lighter.
13Right headlight (high beam).
14Left headlight (high beam). High beam indicator lamp.
15Left headlight (low beam). Rear lights (fog light).* Fog light indicator lamp.*
16Right headlight (low beam).

* Since 1986, the fog light lamps are protected not by fuse 15 of the mounting block, but by a separate fuse located in the wire near the fog light switch.

Some circuits are not protected by fuses. As a rule, these are the most important circuits, the trouble-free operation of which is required in all situations. For example, the engine ignition system is not protected by fuses, so as not to introduce elements into it that reduce the reliability of the system in operation. There are also no fuses in the starting circuit, so as not to reduce the reliability of starting the engine. In addition, the battery charging circuit, the carburetor electromagnetic valve control circuit, and the high and low beam headlight relay are not protected by fuses.

To facilitate installation, all wires are combined into bundles. The wires in the bundles are fastened with adhesive tape, and in some bundles they are welded to a PVC tape. The electrical connection of the front wire harnesses with the interior wire harnesses is carried out through the mounting block 37, located in the air intake box on the left side of the car. For ease of maintenance, almost all fuses and auxiliary relays are placed in the mounting block.

The mounting block has sockets for the window lift relay (K7) and the lighting system lamp control relay (K4), which are not installed on VAZ-2108 and VAZ-2109 vehicles. Contact jumpers are installed in place of the lamp control relay (shown by arrows in the K4 socket).

The diagram shows the connection of the parking light system wires to the steering column switch 55. This system was used on cars up to 1988. It could be used to turn on the right or left side parking light lamps on a parked car. Since 1988, the wires of this system have been excluded, and the parking light switching contacts in the steering column switch are not used.
