On VAZ-2108, VAZ-2109 vehicles, a single-wire electrical equipment system with a rated operating voltage of 12 V is used. However, depending on the specific conditions, the voltage in the electrical equipment system can vary from 11 V to 14.5 V, and within these limits, consumers must maintain their performance. WITH "weight" the negative terminals of the power supplies are connected (battery and generator) and second consumer findings.
The activation and operation of all systems is controlled by the corresponding switches and relays. The supply voltage to most consumers is supplied through the ignition switch. The exception is those consumers whose work may be required at any time, including when the car is stationary with the ignition off. These consumers include: alarm, horn, brake lights in the rear lights, socket 16 for a portable lamp, interior lighting dome. These consumers are connected directly to the generator-battery line.
For protection against short circuits, the vehicle has 16 fuses located in mounting block 37. Three fuses (4th, 8th and 12th) designed for a current of 16 A, and the rest for 8 A. The fuse numbers and the circuits they protect are shown in the table:
№ | Protected circuits |
1, 2 | Reserve |
3 | headlight cleaners (at the moment of switching on). Relay for switching on headlight cleaners (contacts). Headlight washer valve. |
4 | headlight cleaners (in working mode). Relay for switching on headlight cleaners (winding). Heater fan Washer motor. Rear window cleaner. Rear window washer relay. Valves for switching on the washer of the windshield and rear windows. Relay (winding) turning on the electric fan of the engine cooling system. Relay (winding) switching on and a control lamp for heating the rear window. |
5 | Direction indicators and relay-interrupter of direction indicators and alarms (in turn guidance mode). Control lamp of indexes of turn. Rear lights (reversing light bulbs). Switch on relay and windshield wiper. Generator excitation winding (when starting the engine). Indicator lamps: brake fluid level, oil pressure, carburetor air damper and parking brake. Light board lamp "Stop". Coolant temperature gauge. Fuel gauge with reserve warning lamp. Voltmeter. |

16 | Right headlight (dipped beam). |
* Since 1986, fog lamps are not protected by fuse 15 of the mounting block, but by a separate fuse located in the wire near the fog light switch.
Some circuits are not protected by fuses. As a rule, these are the most critical circuits, the failure-free operation of which is required in all situations. For example, the engine ignition system is not protected by fuses so as not to introduce elements into it that reduce the reliability of the system in operation. There are also no fuses in the starting circuit so as not to reduce the reliability of starting the engine. In addition, the battery charging circuit, the carburetor solenoid valve control circuit, and the high and low beam relays are not protected by fuses.
To facilitate installation, all wires are bundled. The wires in the harnesses are fastened with adhesive tape, and at some of the harnesses they are welded to a PVC plastic tape. The electrical connection of the front wiring harnesses to the passenger compartment wiring harnesses is carried out through the mounting block 37, located in the air intake box on the left side of the car. For ease of maintenance, almost all fuses and auxiliary relays are placed in the mounting block.
Relay sockets are provided in the mounting block (K7) power windows and relays (K4) monitoring the health of lamps of the lighting system, which are not installed on VAZ-2108, VAZ-2109 vehicles. Contact jumpers are installed mutually for the relay for monitoring the health of the lamps (shown by arrows in socket K4).
The diagram shows the connection of the parking light system wires to the steering column switch 55. This system was used on cars until 1988. With its help, it was possible to turn on the side light lamps of the right or left sides while the car was stationary. Since 1988, the wires of this system have been eliminated, and the parking light contacts in the steering column switch are not used.
