Scheme for adjusting the clearance between the pads and the brake drum
A - adjusting eccentrics of the front pads; B - adjusting eccentrics of the rear pads; S - left wheel; d - right wheel. The top arrows show the direction of the vehicle
1. Press a brake pedal with effort 98–117 (10–12 kgf), to ensure a snug fit between the pads and the drum.
2. While holding the shoes in this position, turn the hex sockets of the eccentrics A and B (see fig. Scheme for adjusting the clearance between the pads and the brake drum) in the indicated direction until they come into contact with the pads.
3. Release the pedal and turn the adjusting eccentrics in the opposite direction by about 10°.
4. Sharply press the brake pedal 3-4 times and with the pedal released, by rotating the suspended wheels, check that the pads do not touch the drum.
5. During a test drive, check the effectiveness of the brakes, the amount of free and full travel of the brake pedal.
6. It is necessary to drive 5–7 km without using the brakes, and, having stopped, make sure by touch that the brake drums do not heat up. If the drums become very hot, repeat the adjustment.
7. If it is not possible to establish the required clearance between the shoes and the drum, replace the brake shoes and re-adjust the clearance.
