When replacing the belt, you need to brake the car with the parking brake and engage fourth or fifth gear in the gearbox. Remove the front protective cover of the toothed belt.
Loosen the alternator drive belt and remove it from the pulleys. After unscrewing the mounting bolt, remove the alternator drive pulley from the crankshaft and replace the pulley mounting bolt.
Set the gearbox lever to neutral and turn the crankshaft clockwise to a position where the mark on the flywheel, visible in the clutch housing hatch, is opposite the middle division of the scale (figure 30). In this case, the mark on the camshaft pulley should be opposite the installation mark on the rear cover of the toothed belt (see figure 27).
Loosen the tension roller axle mounting nut and turn it to a position where the belt is as loose as possible. Remove the belt from the pulleys.
Place the new belt on the crankshaft pulley and, while tensioning both branches of the belt, place the left branch on the coolant pump pulley and move it behind the tension roller. Place the belt on the camshaft pulley and slightly tension it with the tension roller, turning its axis counterclockwise. Avoid sharp bends when installing the belt.
Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and check whether the timing marks on the camshaft pulley and the rear belt cover match (see figure 27), and also whether the mark on the flywheel is opposite the middle division of the scale.
If the marks do not match, repeat the belt installation operation. If they do match, unscrew the bolt from the crankshaft, install the generator drive pulley and secure it with a bolt and washer, finally tightening it to a torque of 10.5 kgf/m.
Adjust the timing belt tension and install the front protective cover. Install the alternator drive belt and adjust its tension as described in Chapter "Generator". Check and, if necessary, adjust the ignition timing (see chapter "Ignition system").
