Note. According to the Highway Code, the parking brake must hold the vehicle on a 25% slope when the parking brake lever is moved 2 to 8 clicks (on models of release before 1995 - 5-7 clicks).
In practice, you can check the parking brake adjustment by placing the car on a level surface. Raise the parking brake lever all the way and try to move the car with all your might. If you succeeded, then you need to adjust the parking brake.
Check lever travel. If the lever travel is more than 8 clicks, the handbrake will not hold the vehicle downhill. If the lever travel is less than 2 clicks, then while driving there is a possibility of braking the rear wheels. In both cases, the parking brake must be adjusted.
1. On pre-1995 models only, raise the parking brake lever 1 to 2 clicks.
2. Loosen the equalizer locknut.
3. Tighten the equalizer adjusting nut until the parking brake cable is tightened. If the cable cannot be tightened, then it must be replaced.
4. Check that the full travel of the parking brake lever should be 2-4 clicks (on pre-1995 models - 4-5 clicks).
5. Then tighten the equalizer locknut.
6. Lower the parking brake lever all the way down and rotate the rear wheels. They should rotate freely, without jamming.
