Tightening bolts and nuts
Prepare the tool, place the car on the inspection pit. Go down under the body, perform an external inspection and make sure that:
- all connections of the brake hydraulic system are dry,
- no leaks on the rear wheels,
- the brake system hoses are not twisted,
- all crown nuts of the steering rod joints are cotter-pinned,
- the rubber boots of the constant velocity joints (there are four of them) are not torn and the clamps securely fasten them,
- the rubber boots of the suspension ball joints are not torn,
- hole plugs available.
Tighten all bolts:
- rear suspension,
- exhaust systems,
- protective screen of the neutralizer, if any,
- gearboxes,
- front suspension,
- remove the engine splash guard and carefully tighten the oil pan bolts.
At the top, you need to do the following operations:
- lift the car with a jack, check for play in the wheel hub bearings,
- remove the front wheels and check the brakes, tighten the bolts,
- remove the rear wheels and check the rear brakes.
In the engine compartment:
- check the level of all liquids and oils and top up if necessary,
- check the tightness of the steering rack and engine bolts,
- check the tightness of the cooling system clamps and it is better to replace them with worm-type ones,
- lubricate door hinges and locks.
After all these operations, you can safely drive until the first maintenance.
Security alarm for a peaceful sleep
To find your car where you left it, security alarms will help you.
Security means can be classified as follows:
- locks that block controls and opening of the engine hood,
- devices that prevent the engine from starting,
- electronic devices that include an audible alarm,
- devices that make it difficult to remove individual units from a vehicle.
Let's consider the purpose of each of them.
A lock on the pedal, gearbox, steering wheel shaft or steering wheel itself virtually eliminates theft, but only when the car is in plain sight.
For this purpose, the following mechanical anti-theft protection devices are installed:
- dEFEND-LOCK gearbox lock. This American metal over-console type lock is installed on the gearbox lever, and the under-console, almost invisible, is installed on the gearbox rod, and provides reliable protection for your car;
- steering shaft locks "Garant". The domestic anti-theft lock "Garant" blocks the steering of the "ten", it is installed on the lower part of the steering shaft, in the area between the brake pedal and the steering bracket. The inserted stopper with a conical part rests against the steering bracket on one side and against the brake pedal on the other. The reliability of protection is ensured by several points at once, embedded in the design, tests have confirmed its high resistance to breaking.
They have reliable protection and high secrecy.
On the "ten" the hood opens quite easily, and your "friend" will be more securely protected if you install the engine hood protection together with the electronic protection. The American electromechanical device that blocks the engine hood HOOD LOCK eliminates the possibility of access to the underhood space and thus makes it difficult to steal the car.
It makes sense to put a lock on the hood even if you have an electronic alarm. Trying to turn off the siren under a closed hood will be much more difficult.
Currently, there are many different electronic security devices, from not very expensive to very expensive. Usually, such alarms are equipped with both a volumetric sensor and a shock sensor. Many more service functions are added to the alarm.
One of the reliable and not very expensive systems is the electronic car security system with remote control ALLIGATOR LX-440. The standard functions of the system are as follows:
- 2 two-button programmable transmitters and the ability to install 4 such transmitters;
- dual channel receiver;
- dynamic code using Keeloq microprocessor;
- programmable personal system shutdown code;
- valet push button switch with the following functions:
a) turns the service mode on and off,
b) switches off the system if the radio transmitter is lost or inoperative,
c) disables Anti-Hijack mode;
- lED indicator with 7 modes;
- 6-tone siren;
- built-in side light control relay;
- remote control of door locks (installation of additional relays is required);
- starter lock (additional relay installation required);
- 2-Level Impact Sensor with Detachable Connection;
- warning mode;
- second channel output for controlling the trunk lock or additional devices;
- negative and positive door trigger inputs;
- hood/trunk negative trigger input;
- remote mode "Panic";
- limited time of alarm mode;
- disabling alarm mode in 2 stages;
- improved Anti-Hijack mode;
- power supply to the system via alternative networks when the main power supply is disconnected;
- sound and light signals for confirmation when arming/disarming the system;
- warning about previous system activations;
- memory for the last 2 system activations with zone/trigger indication;
- quick disabling of the passive arming function;
- automatic re-arming of the system;
- silent arming and disarming of the system;
- setting the system to security mode with the sensor disabled;
- instant activation of the siren when the system is triggered;
- inability to turn on the security mode when the ignition is on.
The programmable functions of the system are as follows:
- passive arming;
- passive arming with door locking;
- long-term disablement of siren confirmation signals;
- system shutdown mode (using the Valet switch or using a personal code);
- temporary disabling of the sensor warning zone after 5 triggers;
- automatic door locking when ignition is turned on;
- automatic door unlocking when ignition is turned off;
- voltage drop alarm function;
- enabling Anti-Hijack mode using channel 3 of the transmitter;
- door lock control pulse duration: 1 or 3.5 seconds.
A number of system functions described above may be subject to change (reprogrammed) when installing the system at the owner's request. Such functions are only programmed by qualified installers, as they are used depending on the type of vehicle; these functions cannot be changed further, as this may cause the entire system to fail.
Devices that make it difficult to remove composite wheels from a vehicle include wheel locks and secret wheel bolts.
There are many ways to protect your car: if possible, install all four types; if not, install at least one, so that your soul does not hurt too much when you leave your "friend".
Protecting the body and fenders
It is advisable to protect the body when buying, we have already said this. Often many people have a question - is it necessary to carry out anti-corrosion protection or not? The plant guarantees protection of the bottom for 5 years, the "ten" has more than 50% of galvanized parts. But experience suggests - it is necessary to do this. For those who are going to drive for a long time - you need to do it for yourself, and those who are going to sell their "friend" in a couple of years - a protected body is always more valuable. Almost any body has places where they are not processed during assembly on the conveyor and they need to be protected. The action of dirt, moisture, snow and especially salt, and just time, unprotected metal ages.
There are two types of protection - passive and active. Passive isolates the metal surface from atmospheric influences. Passive ones include mastics that protect the bottom, fenders and shock absorber niches. The mastic is applied to a clean dry surface in a thick layer. This should be done before active driving. It is not necessary to apply it to a dirty surface and it is even harmful.
Mastics retain their properties at low temperatures, have high abrasive resistance and provide long-term protection; ease of application is achieved by the optimal physical parameters of the material. Currently, stores have a very large selection of domestically produced mastics, developed on the basis of the latest scientific discoveries of Russian and foreign scientists in the field of combating corrosion*
Domestic mastics include:
- "NOVA-Grif" is a wax-based product with bitumen components and corrosion inhibitors to protect the underbody of a car from exposure to sand, water, gravel and salt;
- "NOVA-Gold" is a new generation product with a metallized filler. Due to the introduction of the filler, the water resistance of the film is significantly increased, the internal stress of the coating is reduced, and the mastic does not crack over time. This leads to increased reliability of anti-corrosion protection of the bottom;
- "NOVA-Plus A" is also a new generation mastic. It is a mixture of modified paraffin polymers in a non-toxic solvent. It provides more durable protection of metal surfaces with traces of corrosion. Neutral corrosion modifiers prevent the development of corrosion processes;
- "NOVA-Bitsink" is a super-new domestic mastic. This is a zinc-filled anti-corrosion mastic of combined action, provides long-lasting protection of the bottom with traces of rust and completely rusty. It contains zinc-containing ingredients - 3rd generation inhibitors, neutral corrosion modifiers and products of the latest technologies.
Mastics made using Dutch technology and from Dutch materials have also proven themselves well. These are "Tectyl-standard", "Tectyl-antigravel".
Active protection transforms the metal surface, making it resistant to the effects of oxygen, moisture and dissolved salt. The active preparations for protecting the body from corrosion include the preparation "Movil-Anticor". It received its name from two cities, Moscow and Vilnius, where the enterprises that participated in the development of this preparation were located.
"Movil-Anticor" is an ideal, time-tested product for protecting the following internal cavities:
- trunk lid;
- inner surfaces of the rear wing;
- engine compartment;
- door flanges;
- door tin strips;
- door sills;
- hidden cavities on the bottom.
This preparation has good penetrating ability between spot welding and other metal surfaces. Remember: "Movil-Anticor" is not applied to rubber and synthetic surfaces, it destroys them.
Other active protection preparations developed using new technologies include the following domestic materials:
- "NOVA-Real" is a composition for treating hidden cavities of a car. The basis of the preparation is modified paraffin with corrosion inhibitors. Specially developed for Russian operating conditions. It has excellent moisture-displacing properties, excellent adhesion, is not subject to aging and remains plastic even at low temperatures. The application technology ensures high quality of treatment without drilling additional holes in the car body. The composition does not have a strong odor, it is practically colorless and does not pollute the car;
- "NOVA-Fly" - the basis of the mastic is special components based on petroleum products in a non-toxic solvent. It has a high penetrating ability;
- "NOVA-Plus ML" — the basis of the mastic is a mixture of modified paraffin polymers in a non-toxic solvent. Contains highly effective corrosion modifiers and crevice corrosion inhibitors;
- "NOVA-Bitsink" is a combined action mastic that provides long-lasting protection for both the bottom and other metal surfaces with traces of rust.
Active protection products for hidden cavities of a car include materials such as "Tectyl-bronze" and "Tectyl-zinc", manufactured using Dutch technology.
Foreign drugs include:
- WAXOL - from Switzerland,
- SOUDAL - from Belgium,
- DINITROL - from Sweden.
Those who take the work of protecting their "friend" personally and who do not trust others to do it usually resort to doing the bodywork themselves. But what is of no small importance to many is that it will cost them five times less, or even more. But when you have money and no time, there are many companies that will put the bodywork in order.
If you treat the bottom of the wings and the body in the area of the wheels only with mastic, it can last about 2-3 years. Under the influence of sand, gravel, salt, it is destroyed. Therefore, after treating the body and wings, it is necessary to install cup-shaped fenders made of fiberglass or other materials. The best material for fenders is considered to be high-polyurethane composite. In addition to resistance to salt and sand, it also has impact strength. It repeats the configuration of the wing and protects the car body very well. Some companies produce fenders together with a mudguard, this is very good, but if you bought without a mudguard, then make it yourself. The rules prohibit the operation of a car without mudguards.
If your car has mudguards, then such a car will be valued more. Each brand of car has its own mudguards, and naturally, they are not interchangeable. Currently, the production of such mudguards has begun for the "tens". There are many companies that produce mudguards, both imported and domestic. Among the domestic companies that produce mudguards, St. Petersburg companies and protective mudguards from NOVA "NOVA-Plast" are considered good. They have ideal geometry for the "tens", are elastic and wear-resistant.
Due to the unfavorable environmental conditions, especially in industrial areas of the country, there are cases of aggressive impact of individual components from the environment on the protective decorative coating of the car. These effects are manifested in the form of a red rash, local change in the color of the external paint coating, local destruction of the enamel coating of the body. The reason for the appearance of the rash is the deposition of the smallest particles of metal dust on the surface of the body, which is glued to the body by corrosion products, especially during wetting with dew.
You can also protect the paintwork with mastics. They form an invisible, wear-resistant film that protects the paint from these adverse environmental factors. These mastics also prevent the paintwork from becoming discolored.
The choice of mastics is large, we can offer domestic mastic "NOVA-Profi".
Darkening of windows and rear lights
Glazing of the car interior is very important for safe driving. Its technical purpose is to protect passengers and the driver from precipitation, cold or heat. In addition, glazing is an element of active safety of the car and an element of passive safety.
Active safety is the properties of car elements that reduce the occurrence of accidents. Car glazing refers to the operational properties of active safety. It is important that the glazing and associated windshield wipers provide you with a view in the vertical and horizontal planes and have sufficient transparency.
Passive safety refers to the ability of a car to reduce the consequences of an accident. In this case, glazing as a safety element can contribute to injuries in an accident.
Recently, it has become fashionable to darken not only glass, but also headlights. Let's consider how this affects car safety and how to choose the right darkening methods.
The international and domestic standards for glass light transmission are defined as follows: for the windshield no less than 75%, and for the side and rear 70%. There are also standards for visibility and passive safety.
Glass darkening can be done in two ways: tinting with film and replacing the standard glass with colored glass.
The advantage of the first method: the ability to quickly install and replace, as well as the creation of a large spectrum of colors. The disadvantages of this method include: easily subject to mechanical impacts, light transmission changes depending on the impact of sunlight. Both the first and second disadvantages lead to a decrease in the transmission of light flow.
When tinting glass with American film Sfolar Card, the glass acquires the properties of triplex, i.e. it becomes shatterproof. Tinting glass in accordance with the requirements of the standard improves the appearance of the car. The film protects the upholstery of the seats and the interior from fading, maintaining almost complete visibility from the inside, creates the effect of one-way visibility, preventing the interior of the car from being distinguished from the outside. The film has a special coating that makes it resistant to scratches and does not let in ultraviolet rays.
Advantages of installing tinted glass: resistance to mechanical and atmospheric influences, low coefficient of light loss and reduced transmission of ultraviolet radiation. Disadvantages: complexity of installation, very small spectrum of colors and quite high cost. You have to pay for comfort and quality.
One common disadvantage of tinted windows - has not yet been scientifically examined, but is quite obvious. A vehicle following a car with tinted windows loses information content, there is no information about the situation ahead through the tinted windows of this car.
Dimming the rear lights of the car also worsens the active safety of the car. The external light signaling system is designed to transmit information about the position of the car to other road users, about the maneuvers of this car and its condition. The information is transmitted by external light signals, helps road users correctly predict subsequent maneuvers. To external light signaling (that is, to the rear lights) the following requirements are imposed:
- ensuring reliable perception of transmitted information;
- ensuring safe perception of signals with minimal perception time, especially in traffic flow;
- the condition for the visibility of the signal is to ensure the contrast of the signal with the background surrounding it, i.e. a black background and a red light do not provide contrast;
- the ability to see the signal in the absence of voltage in the network at any time of the day, i.e. normal lights have reflective elements and in the dark - when illuminated, they provide information about the presence of a vehicle.
Naturally, darkened lights do not meet any of the requirements for light signaling. This significantly worsens the active safety of the car, especially at night. Therefore, do not adopt bad fashion, do not darken the rear lights.
The desire to improve your car, equip it with additional equipment, increase efficiency and comfort, and so on is a natural human desire.
