2. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn on the starter. If the engine does not start on the first attempt, turn off the ignition and turn on the starter again after 20-30 seconds. It is not recommended to turn on the starter for more than 10-15 seconds. Do not press the accelerator pedal while starting the engine. In case of difficulty starting the engine (excessive amount of fuel entered the combustion chambers) press the accelerator pedal all the way down and turn on the starter for 10-15 seconds to purge the cylinders, then release the accelerator pedal and start the engine in the established order.
In the variant version of the cars, if you try to start for more than 20 seconds, the starter will automatically turn off (protection against its overheating).
After starting the engine, release the ignition key, which will automatically return to position I (see fig. 31). When the engine is running steadily after starting, smoothly release the clutch pedal.
At ambient temperatures of minus 25°C and below, as well as during heavy snowfalls, it is recommended to cover the ventilation holes in the bumper with an apron to more intensively warm up the engine and maintain its thermal conditions.
Starting the engine in cold weather
These recommendations ensure that you can start a fully functional vehicle with a battery charged to at least 75%.
1. The engine oil must match the ambient temperature (see appendix 1).
2. Gasoline evaporation class - for the winter period of the year depending on the climatic region of application in accordance with GOST R 51105-97.
3. It is advisable to reduce the spark plug interelectrode gap in winter to a minimum value, that is, to 1 mm.
4. When leaving the car in an open parking lot for a long time, it is recommended to "burn" the spark plugs before turning off the engine. To do this, increase the engine speed to 3000 min⁻1 for one minute, and then turn it off.
5. Before starting, turn on the ignition and pause for a few seconds to allow the electric fuel pump to raise the pressure in the fuel rail to the operating value.
6. Before starting and during starting, keep the clutch pedal pressed, and do not press the accelerator pedal.

7. If there are no flashes in the engine cylinders within 10 seconds, stop trying to start. Repeat after 40 seconds.
8. If the second start attempt was unsuccessful, the third attempt should be started with the accelerator pedal fully depressed (cylinder scavenging mode). After 6-8 seconds of blowing, begin to smoothly release the accelerator pedal, holding it in the position in which flashes appear.
9. If the third start attempt fails, then either the ambient temperature is lower than that specified in the "Technical Conditions" (minus 25 degrees is the limit of the possibility of a cold start of the engine without auxiliary devices), either the engine is faulty or there is some deviation from the recommendations given above.
