Cardan transmission — general information (VAZ-2121)

Since the second half of 1988, VAZ 2121 cars and their modifications have been equipped with a cardan transmission with high-durability joints. Its components are not interchangeable with the previously installed cardan transmission, but mutual replacement of cardan transmissions as a whole is possible.

The new cardan transmission is externally distinguished by its increased dimensions and the presence of grease nipples in the cardan joints and in the splined forks. The cardan joints in the new cardan transmission have improved sealing of the needle bearings and their better dirt protection, which is achieved by using seals - radial and end seals. The diameter of the crosspiece tenons and bearings has been increased. Lubrication of the crosspiece bearings is carried out through grease nipples with consistent grease No.158 or fiol-2U, and splined connections - with grease fiol-1 or fiol-2U.
