Removal and installation
Having set the parking brake lever to the lowest position, disconnect the ends of the cables from the brake shoe drive levers.
Loosen locknut 4 (see fig. 149) and adjusting nut 5, remove the return spring, then completely unscrew the lock nut and adjusting nut. Disconnect the cable brackets from the floor of the body and the rear tips from the brake shields, remove the brackets and the rear cable. Remove the guide roller with the bushing, then the protective cover of the lever and the lever assembly, as well as the front cable. After removing the cotter pin and removing the thrust washer, disconnect the front cable from the parking brake lever.
Install the parking brake in the reverse order, followed by its adjustment. When installing, lubricate with grease Litol-24 or LSTs-15 the rear cable guide, the lever axle, the roller bushing and the tip of the front cable.
Definition of technical condition
Carefully check the condition of the parking brake parts. If a break or rubbing of the wires of the cable is detected, it is replaced with a new one. Make sure that the sector teeth and latches are not damaged. Damaged parts are replaced. Check the correctness of the spring. It should ensure the return of the lever to the non-working position.
Check the condition of the rear cable sheath and the fastening of the tips on the sheath, and also make sure that the cable moves freely inside the sheath. If the sheath is damaged and the fastening of the tips is loosened, the cable is replaced.
Adjustment. If the parking brake does not hold the car on a slope of up to 30% or is activated when the lever is moved more than 4-5 teeth of the ratchet device, it is adjusted in the following order:
- move the lever to the lowest position;
- release locknut 4 (see fig. 149) tensioning device and, wrapping the adjusting nut 5, tighten the cable so that the stroke of the lever in the sector is 4-5 teeth under a force of 40 kgf;
- after performing several braking, make sure that the stroke of the lever has not changed and the car slows down during this stroke.
If the cables are replaced with new ones, then two or three times braking is carried out, applying a force equal to approximately 40 kgf to the parking brake drive lever so that the cables are pulled out.
