Voltage Regulator Repair (VAZ-2101)

Contents: Replacement of cover and gasket ↓ Soldering breaks ↓ Cleaning contacts ↓ Cleaning the voltage regulator ↓
The voltage regulator should be repaired only in exceptional cases, in other cases it is recommended to replace it. The following operations are allowed for the regulator repair.

Replacement of cover and gasket

When installing a new cover, make sure that the cover and gasket are completely clean and that the gasket is installed correctly. After installation, tighten the screws until they stop. If dirt appears inside the regulator, clean the contacts and other parts of the regulator.

Soldering breaks

Soldering is performed with solder using a small amount of neutral flux, protecting the insulation from overheating. Remove excess flux after soldering, since its residue, evaporating from the heat emitted by the regulator during operation, can contaminate the contacts.

Cleaning contacts

To clean the contacts, remove the anchor spring and, after loosening nut 6 (see fig. 159), lift the stand 8 of the fixed contact of the 1st stage. Using a flat velvet file, carefully clean the contacts, removing burnt materials and oxides over the entire surface. The file must be completely dry, washed in pure alcohol or gasoline. The depressions that have appeared on the contacts due to burning must be cleaned with a clean steel pointed pin. Remove silver filings from the regulator body by blowing it with dry and clean air.

Install the anchor spring in place. By moving the 1st stage fixed contact post, adjust the gap between the anchor and the core to (1.4±0.07) mm, ensuring that the contacts touch correctly. By moving the 2nd stage fixed contact post, adjust the distance between the 2nd stage contacts to (0.45±0.1) mm, also ensuring that the contacts touch correctly. Tighten nut 6, install the gasket and cover in place, then check the regulator on the stand and adjust if necessary.

Cleaning the voltage regulator

If foreign substances penetrate into the regulator, after cleaning the contacts, before checking and adjusting, carefully wash the regulator with pure alcohol or gasoline, then dry it (without lid) in an oven at a temperature of 120°C for 2 hours. Check the regulator on the stand and adjust it if necessary.
